HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-06-12, Page 2By Jo-Ann McDonaldThere was an exciting eventhappening at the Brussels LegionBranch this week.A film crew arrived to do somefilming at the Branch and at the
Brussels United Church about a
young man with ties to the Brussels
community who served in World
War I.
Will Mayberry, whose name is on
the Brussels cenotaph and on the
stained glass window at the Brussels
United Church is being remembered
as one of the fallen soldiers featured
on an upcoming series this fall. The
series will hopefully be ready for
November.
It was Yap Productions that was on
site filming with the crew of three
and the historian, Marc George.George is the director of theCentral Museum of the RoyalRegiment of Canadian Artillery atthe Canadian Forces Base in Shiloh,Manitoba. The series title, Finding
the fallen, is about soldiers who were
involved in the Battle of Hill 70 and
the 10th Trench Battalion, an all-
Canadian Battalion, which suffered
losses nearly as bad as the Battle of
Vimy Ridge.
Mayberry was a member of this
battalion and his story will be
explored and told.
The crew arrived at the Brussels
United Church to film then arrived at
the Branch around 2 p.m. where they
met with Glenn Bridge.
A young man named Victor, who
has been in contact with Bridge, is a
freelance writer, who grew up in the
Underwood area, and has always
been an avid history buff.
The Legion president also met
with this young man and was quite
impressed with his knowledge ofMayberry and what they haveuncovered in their research to thispoint. They filmed both downstairs andupstairs at the Branch.PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 2008.
We’ve had our share of the
raindrops this week. Everything is
once again shiny, green and
beautiful.
The Lions Club once again
offered a fun time to the community.
Their 31st elimination draw was
held Saturday evening at the
community centre. Delicious roast
beef (or hot dogs) with all the good
stuff that goes with it got everyone
in the right mood as the tickets were
drawn and removed from the big
board. Balloon creatures and articles
and faces beautifully painted kept
the children busy and entertained
while the adults visited. It’s one of
those community events when folks
mix and mingle and everyone has a
good time.
This year the Zweps were the big
money winners. Thanks to all the
Lions Club and their good wives for
this evening.
Decoration Day was held at
several cemeteries on Sunday. This
is a time to remember the folks from
the community who have died. For
Brussels we are fortunate that the
Legion folk organize the service
with the area churches in support.
Sitting under the trees gazing over
our well kept cemetery, memories of
loved ones flowed.
The Boyntons were back in the
village over the weekend. Jeff,
Nicole, Erin and Emma from Long
View, Alberta were visiting with
Bruce and Dawn Johnston and girls
while Jeanette checked out her
friends on Tory Hill. It’s always
good to see old friends.
Save your appetite and donations
for lunch on Saturday at Foodland.
The volunteers for Kids Corner will
barbecue lunch for you to support
their worthwhile work. So mark it
on your calendar and know your
money is well used and appreciated
by the local churches who bring this
opportunity to your children in July.
Funfest plans are going well for
the last weekend in July. Make
breakfast part of your plans on the
Saturday morning. The United
Church is the place to meet your
friends and have a nice visit while
you eat.
Father’s Day is on Sunday, so get
the day started right and take Pop to
the firehall where you’ll get enough
breakfast to last him until supper.
Our terrific fellas who are there for
our safety also have enough practise
cooking breakfast, you’ll not be
disappointed.
Support our firefighters and their
work. Dad will feel appreciated at
the same time. It’s a good deal for
everyone.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
