By Lois ElliottDistrict PROThe Huron West District of theWomen’s Institute held its 108thannual meeting at the Belgrave WIHall on May 26.President, Jean Fraser chaired themeeting which was hosted by the Maitland Branch with the theme, WI Women Facing Challenges. Opening exercises and the annual reports filled the morning agenda. London area president, Anne Innes, said the curators workshop will be held Aug. 5 at Kirkton- Woodham Community Centre and London Area Convention is on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Shedden. Others bringing greetings were: Huron Perth, Eleanor Elgie; Huron South, Lois Gill and Perth South, Susan Christie. An interesting historical society report was presented by Isabel Bissonnette who encouraged everyone to attend the annual dinner meeting on Oct. 24 at Clinton with the speaker Pamela Stanley. Pat Saundercock of Clinton, brought greetings from the 4-H council. She said the 15 clubs have about 170 members and 38 leaders. The agriculture projects are being updated. One new club, miniature horse club is quite popular. Membership fees are $60 with $50 going to 4-H Ontario, leaving only $10 in Huron. They still collect used pop cans and used car batteries as a fundraiser. The 4-H dinner and silent auction will be held Aug. 18 at the Auburn Hall. 4-H is still alive and well in Huron County, she said. Each year a cash donation is given to Friends of 4-H. Everyone enjoyed a potluck noon luncheon after which the president entertained with a humourous story entitled, Never Again. Guest speaker, Patty Pizziola, editor of Home and Country presented many unique ideas on how to meet challenges head on, with solutions to move forward. WI needs to change to meet the needs ofyounger women who have limitedtime. Members need to find theactivities and issues that matter tothem.Musical entertainment by Mrs.Krista Scott-Hewitt and TammyHewitt was enjoyed. Area voting delegate Ruth Gourley, stated that a report of each provincial board meeting will be mailed to each branch. Provincial board director, Ilene Chesterman, brought greetings and also had items for sale. An in memoriam service for all deceased members was led by Debbie Bauer and Donna Young. The new slate of officers was installed by Anne Innes. Courtesies were extended to all by Nancy Jardin. The 2009 District annual meeting will be hosted by Belgrave Branch. The theme of the meeting was the health-related, When In Doubt, Check It Out, and it featured a potluck lunch.
