Henry and Maryanne Grobbink had the joy of having their daughter marry on Saturday, May 24. Jennifer married John Taylor of Goderich, at St. Aloysius Church in Kitchener. It was a beautiful day for the wedding and everything went quite smoothly all day. The wedding party included three of Jennifer’s sisters, Veronica, Rosie and Laurie and her brother Jeff was a groomsman. The flower girl was her niece, Lily Grobbink, who was very excited to tell me about her pretty white dress she wore for the wed- ding. The reception was held in St. Jacobs and the newlyweds will be residing in Kitchener. Congratulations Jennifer and John. Off for a father/son weekend away were Steve and Gavin Bowers. They travelled to Bancroft to go white- water canoeing. It sounds a little wet and cold for my liking but Gavin reports having a great time. He reports that only one fellow fell in and it wasn’t him. Two area women were among the many attending the visit of Mike Holmes in Listowel. Colleen Smith and her sister Val Schurter went to the lecture by Mike, then attended the dinner as well. Mike, who arrived by helicopter, was speaking at Listowel District Secondary School to students and others about the importance of well-trained tradespeople. Colleen was interviewed by the TV reporter and she thought the evening was great and so is Mike. The members of the Walton area Sports Club met on Monday night to give the building a once over. They discussed the new TCC tower at the back of the property and the responsibilities of the sports club and the TCC. The hydro service to the tower was hooked up about three months ago. Hydro has replaced and moved the post about two feet out front of the building, part of thework being done in the village. The committee also discussedupcoming fundraising for the sum-mer with four dinners and themotocross. The committee consistsof Val Shortreed, Gloria Wilbee,Heidi McClure, Linda McDonaldand Jo-Ann McDonald. The committee discussed ideas on how to get new blood interested in organizing minor ball at the park again. There is a new generation of children in the area and probably enough for at least a team or two next year. The committee would like to hear from interested parents for next year’s program now, so some planning could begin. We had a family birthday dinner at home for our son Scott on Monday evening. Scott is a May 24 baby, but the weekend was so busy, we cele- brated on Monday. Joining us for dinner were LeeAnn and Jason Konarski and Kelly McDonald. Away for their annual spring fish- ing trip were the Walton-area boys. They were off to Lindsay to try their luck at fishing. Catching enough fish for them to eat were Carman, Mike and Chris Bernard, Fred, Darrell and Adam McClure, Matt Shortreed, Jim and Will Thompson and Matt Lee and a few others. They managed to get some pan fish and perch and had a good time. While some of the men were away, some of the women were too. Mary Bernard, Heidi McClure and Valerie Shortreed went to Toronto. They went to see Mary’s niece, Kristen, participate in her yearly dance recital program. They stayed at Mary’s sis- ter Anne’s in Richmond Hill and had a great time. They went shopping as well and enjoyed their weekend. Home for a week’s visit and vaca- tion is Sherry Delay and go, Dawson, from Morristown, Tennessee. They are staying with mom and dad, Karen and Barry Hoegy. While home she will be catching up with family and friends and hopefully she has a chance to meet up with many of the Walton folks as well. Congratulations to Murray and Betty Cardiff on their 50th wedding anniversary. They had a lovely open house at the Legion and it was very well attended. The fields at this time have been mostly planted and the next thing you know the hay will be coming off. The wheat is looking good in most fields and my crop advisor saysthat the corn should recover from thefrost of last week. Specialty beanshave yet to be planted in most cases. The ground sure doesn’t seem to bewarming up much but hopefullysummer is soon here with thewarmer weather.Every day my children on the buswatch, as we pass a pond, for the two Canada geese families. They count the goslings and some see five babies and some see seven. Whichever it is, they are cute as they waddle to the water and in they go for their swim with mom and dad close behind. Construction, reconstruction and destruction can be seen going on in the area. New pit silos are being built at the farm of Jim Blake. A new dryer system is in the works at the John Huether farm. There is also to be new brick and an enlarged kitchen area at the home of Jim Blake. There’s a new pool house at Scott Robinson’s. The shed at Gerry Ryan’s damaged in a wind storm is being repaired and a shed on the farm of Brian Alcock has come down. Lots going on around the area. Home from hospital are my mom and Dawn White. Dawn is doing pretty well and will take a little time to recover from her surgery. Alvin McDonald is home and is improving. It was moving weekend for lots of people. Our daughter Kelly moved into her new home on the weekend. The trailer was loaded on Thursday night and taken to New Hamburg where her and Adam’s new home was just completed. More to be moved but that will soon happen. Congratulations to them. Mike and Nicole Noble also moved on the weekend to their new home on Ainley Street. Congrats to them. Off to Kingston was the Emmrich family. Clint and Judy Emmrich were attending their daughter Katie’s graduation ceremony which was held on Tuesday morning. Also on the trip were brother Jamie Emmrich and Clint’s sister from Kitchener. They left on Monday afternoon and stayed the night in Kingston to be able to attend the cer- emony early Tuesday morning. Katie graduated from Queen’s University with her faculty of educa- tion degree. Congratulations to Katie. PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2008. All three games were on the road with the first one in Goderich Monday evening. It was a good game with Walton being defeated by a score of 6-4. Paul Dolmage pitched the game and was backed by some strong defensive play. Outstanding batters for Walton were Scott Leonhardt, Bruce Pearn, Darryl Houston and Barry Young. The Brewers left 10 runners on base. Game two on the road was against the Brussels Tigers on Wednesday evening. Scott Cox was on the mound for the Brewers and they came away with a 11-4 victory. All the Brewers managed to get a hit for the evening and played a solid defensive game. Barry Young had a homerun. Game three on the road was against the Blyth Barons on Sunday afternoon in Blyth. Pitching was shared by Scott McDonald and Dolmage. The 10-7 loss makes the Brewers two and three for the sea- son. The Brewers have two more road games before playing back on the home diamond on Wednesday, June 11. The Walton Wonders ladies team managed their first win of the sea- son against the hard hitting Twisted Sisters Team of Brussels. Good fielding especially by LeeAnn Konarski, kept the deep fly balls to a minimum. A homerun by Joanna Wallace and a string of solid singles brought Walton from behind in the sixth and they managed to hold the Sisters to a run in the seventh to secure the win. (Vicky Bremner photo) By Dalton Hamilton The second meeting of the Grey Township 4-H Club was held on May 30 at the Cranbrook hall. The topic for the meeting was recycling and the environment. Members are collecting pop cans for recycling. They weighed the cans and it takes 26 empty cans to get one pound of aluminum. The club name for this Explore 4- H project is the 4-H Detectives. The next meeting will be held at the home of leader Monique Baan in Walton on June 7. The topic is sewing and cooking, then in the afternoon they are going to visit a dog kennel. On Saturday the club had a nice morning for the garage sale. It start- ed out rainy and with no hydro but the hydro came back on a little while later and then the sun came out too. It was a very successful yard sale. Members also helped Mrs. Baan and hall board member Tracey Swart clean up the hall as a thank you to the board for the use of their facility. Club cleans up
