As a member of the Blyth Festival
Singers, technically I can’t offer a
review of their events. However, the
group held its annual Cabaret night
last Saturday and if you weren’t in
attendance, you missed a chance to
Celebrate Canada.
Husband and wife duo, Gil Garratt
and Cappy Onn, associated with the
Blyth Festival, did an admirable job
as emcees for the evening. They
reminded everyone of what it means
to be a Canadian and encouraged all
to be proud and loud about this great
nation.
During the intermissions Gil and
Cappy had everyone checking out
the silent auction tables which were
laden with dozens of neat items.
Brother and sister team, Matthew
and Sherry Johnston, were the guest
musicians. Raised in a musical
family, Matt and Sherry have teamed
up to represent Canada to audiences
around the world. The Singers were
thrilled to have them stepping and
fiddling at their Cabaret.
Sherry played keyboard while
Matt displayed his versatility with
the fiddle; at one point rolling a
barrel while playing Roll Out the
Barrel.
Those of us south of the village
and along London Road were
without hydro for several hours on
Friday evening. The driver of a
dump truck heading north was
apparently unaware that the box of
his truck had began rising. The box
snapped the wires where they
crossed the highway in the area of
Ben Greidanus’s. Several poles were
broken off and wires drooped
everywhere. Although watching
television was out of the question it
wasn’t much of a hardship when one
didn’t have to worry about keeping
warm.
