The Brussels Bantams have
started another season. This year’s
squad is small but with the help of
some of the local PeeWees should
have a good season.
The team is as follows: Emily
Prior, Brenda Stretton, Andrew
Lindsay, Zach Watson, Rachel
Cousins, Morgan Dietner, Alix
Sholdice, Ty Sebastian, Marissa
Pipe and coaches Sandra Josling and
Lisa Glanville.
Brussels started its season playing
in Ripley. Stretton was on the mound
for the game giving up nine hits,
three homeruns and three strikeouts.
Brussels kept the game close with
singles by Stretton, Dietner, Jeremy
Ross and doubles by Prior and Ross.
The final score was 10-9 for
Ripley.
Brussels was then home to
Fullarton. Sebastian pitched a solid
game with 16 strikeouts, seven
walks and only four hits.
Brussels was strong at the plate.
Dietner had two singles, Sebastian
two doubles, Lindsay a single and a
double, Watson, two homeruns and
Prior a single.
The final score was 11-4 for
Brussels.
The next home games for Brussels
are Monday, June 2 at 8:30 p.m.
against Benmiller, Sunday, June 8 at
2 p.m. against Londesborough and
Monday, June 9 at 8:30 p.m. against
Belgrave.
After a pair of victories this
weekend the Barons remain
undefeated.
On Friday night the Barons
welcomed the Brussels Tigers to
town. Trevor Seip started on the
mound for Blyth. After a scoreless
first inning, Seip set down the Tigers
in the second with two strikeouts
and the third coming on a ground
out.
The Barons took an early lead
with a single by Chris Stewart who
scored on a Dean Wheeler RBI
single.
In the third inning Seip set down
the Tiger batters in order.
Blyth’s third was also scoreless.
Seip kept the Tigers off the bases
in the fourth by setting down the
side again.
The Barons went up by two after a
Seip walk. He was sacrificed to
second by Chris Stewart and came
home on a ground out and RBI for
Cole Stewart. Dean Wheeler,
grounded out to end the inning.
The Tigers answered with an
opening walk followed by the
sacrifice bunt and a run scoring on a
single to close the lead to one.
A pitching change for the Tigers
in the fifth would prove costly as the
Barons scored five to take a
commanding lead. Shawn Bromley
started things off with a single
followed by a walk to Justin Peters
and Darcey Cook reaching on an
error. A Ryan Clancy double earned
him two RBIs followed by a Seip
triple to score another giving Blyth
three runs. A single by Chris Stewart
produced another after Cook scored
on a Mike McDonald ground out.
The sixth inning had Seip retire
the batters with two strikeouts and a
ground ball out. Blyth produced no
runs in their half of the sixth.
The seventh inning saw the Tigers
score one more on a homerun but
that would be it. The final score was
7-2 for Blyth.
Sunday afternoon brought the
Walton Brewers back to town.
Darcey Cook started on the mound
for the Barons getting two ground
outs and one strike out to retire the
Walton batters. Blyth failed to bring
in any runs in the bottom half.
In the second inning, Cook gave
up two hits. Two runs were scored to
give Walton an early lead.
Blyth had no answer in their half
of the second with the only highlight
being a Chris Stewart triple.
The Walton third saw them score
two more runs on two hits to put
them up by four.
In Blyth’s half Peters and Chad
Haggitt walked. A sacrifice bunt by
Pat Cronin and a single by Darcey
Cook brought two home.
Walton got those two runs back
with two hits and an error.
Seip took over pitching duties.
Blyth regained the two runs back
in their half of the inning on hits by
Peters, Cronin, Haggitt and Cook.
The score stayed at 6-4 until the
sixth inning. Walton scored another
run with a walk and a triple to
increase.
Then Blyth exploded in their half
of the inning with seven runs. Three
consecutive walks by Cook,
Wheeler and Scott Bromley,
followed by a Seip single to bring
home two. A Chris Stewart single
scored two, Shawn Bromley’s single
scored two and a ground out gave
Peters an RBI.
Walton couldn’t get it back as Seip
recorded three strike outs.
Blyth won the game 11-7 to record
their fifth straight victory.
Blyth met the defending champs
from Exeter Tuesday night in Exeter
and return to Blyth Friday night
against the Goderich Gators.
Bantams in hit parade
The Blyth Lightning U-12 soccer
team was matched up against
Clinton Chelsey last week.
The Clinton team took advantage
of the wind early in the game. They
pressed Blyth hard and scored
quickly to take the lead.
The Lightning was able to work
the ball up field and Megan Hoggart
capitalized with a goal. Blyth goalie
Marion Studhalter made some good
saves through the first half to keep
Clinton at one.
Things went well for the Blyth
squad in the second half. Dylan
Walton took over goalie duties for
the second half and did well in the
Blyth net until a slip up by the
defence let in another Clinton
goal.
The Lightning attacked the
Clinton net and though they got
many opportunities they could not
score. Clinton took the match 2-1.

Barons just keep on winning
The Blyth Tormentors travelled to
Seaforth for their weekly soccer
match on Thursday, May 29. The
last time this team met the game
ended in a scoreless tie, so the team
went into the match knowing it
would be a close game.
The ball was volleyed back and
forth during the first half of the
game, but Seaforth was the only
team to get on the scoreboard. The
lone goal was a shot into the top
shelf that goalie Wyatt Bearss just
wasn’t tall enough to stop.
Blyth changed their lines. and
played a very strong second half. Jan
Paul VanDorp passed the ball up to
the Seaforth net and Wyatt Bearss
picked it up and scored. Austin
Chaffe scored with an assist from
Derek deBoer. Blyth was really
pumped and made several more
great shots on net, but Seaforth’s
goalie stood strong and prevented
another goal. With just a few
minutes left in the game, Hunter
Broda dove for the ball, but it
slipped away and Seaforth gained
control.
The game ended in a 2-2 tie game.
The coaches decided to participate
in a friendly/fun shootout. Each
team got three shots. deBoer and
Murray Dale didn’t get the ball past
the keeper and Leedert vanDorp got
the ball into the net.
Seaforth got their first ball past
Blyth’s Broda and he saved the next
ball. Broda had a piece of the last
ball, but it went into the net.
Coach Mary Ann Drost was
pleased with the team’s
performance. “They are really
starting to play as a team and work
together to get the ball up the field.
They are starting to think smarter
and use the whole field and making
better passes.”
