The May meeting of Knox UCW
was held on Monday, May 19 in the
Knox United Church basement.
Several guests from Blyth UCW
joined them.
Dane Corneil of the Blyth area
was guest speaker for the evening.
He has been a member of the
Engineers without Borders at the
University of Waterloo for the past
two years and he spoke about his
experiences in Ghana in the autumn
of 2007 working in conjunction with
the Ministry of Agriculture and Food
of that country.
He described his group as being
“very people focused” and stressed
that they place their emphasis on
sustainable projects.
While there he felt fortunate to
live with a very supportive family.
His own parents, Al and Avon
Corneil, and brother Drew visited
him at the end of his stay too.
Dane is a grandson of Marie Toll.
Thanks were extended to Jean
Plaetzer, Grace Cartwright, and
Teresa Roetcisoender for their
superb display of the many items
donated for the annual Community
Care Project.
Joan Van Den Broeck was present
to accept the items on behalf of the
Children’s Aid Society.
She spoke briefly about the
services provided by the CAS and
the gratitude they feel towards the
local UCW groups which regularly
support the CAS.
Congratulations to Brian and
Donna Lynn (Armstrong) Merkley
on the birth of their daughter Sadie
Diane, born on April 22.
Sadie is a granddaughter for
Fred and Ruth Armstrong and

Armstrong.
Saturday, May 24 was Frances
Clark’s auction in Auburn. A large
crowd attended and many treasures
were purchased.
It was a beautiful sunny day, and
the Auburn Lions were on hand to
keep the crowd fed. Many in
attendance have fond memories of
Frances who has moved to London
and we send her our warmest
regards.
Later the same day there was a
beef barbecue at Auburn Riverside
Retreat.
There was roughly enough money
raised to build one house in El
