HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-05-29, Page 12The May meeting of the Melville
Guild was held at the home of Mary
Huether on Tuesday evening May 20
with 12 members present. The theme
of the meeting was Faith.
Eluned McNair opened the
meeting with the call to worship.
Faith of Our Fathers was sung.
Matthew 9: 18-30 was read by Jean
Bewley. Eluned McNair led in
prayer and Mary Huether read two
short stories, Odes to Mothers on
their Special Day, and What is Peace
and the topic, Faith.
Mrs. McNair gave the history and
outline of Queen Victoria’s life and
the hymn My Faith Looks Up To
Thee was sung, followed by
everyone repeating the Mizpah
Benediction.
Mary Carr presided over the
business. She read a poem, What is
Blue?
The minutes of the April meeting
were read and approved. The WMS
treasurer’s report was read by Leona
Armstrong and the Guild treasurer’s
report was read by Jeanne Kirkby.
The Guild will give the board of
managers $4,000.
The Guild will be in charge of the
church service on June 15 to
celebrate Mission Sunday. Mary
Carr will be in charge of the service.
Mary Huether will do the children’s
story and the scripture will be read
by Jean Bewley, Mary Douma and
Eluned McNair.
The roll call was answered with
each member telling what their plans
are for the summer.
After a discussion it was decided
to invite the twin Guild, Wingham to
the October meeting.
Jeanne Kirkby and Mary Carr will
be in charge of the devotions for the
June meeting.
Lunch was served by Mary
Huether and Eluned McNair.
By Rev. Sandra YuleWalton-Bluevale Pastoral ChargeRabbi Lawrence Kushner said“Each lifetime is the pieces of a
jigsaw puzzle. For some, there are
more pieces. For others, the puzzle is
more difficult to assemble. But know
this: you do not have within yourself
all the pieces to your puzzle.
Everyone carries with them at least
one and probably many pieces to
someone else’s puzzle. Sometimes
they know it; sometimes they don’t
know it. And when you present your
piece, which is worthless to you, to
another, whether you know it or not,
whether they know it or not, you are
a messenger from the Most High”.
I believe this quote from Rabbi
Kushner is a wonderful piece of
wisdom that reflects to us just how
interconnected we all are as a body
of humanity.
I have used the term
interconnected in many of my
sermons but I think this illustration
of the puzzle shows us not only are
we all interconnected but that every
piece is crucial to the formation of
the whole.
One piece of the puzzle cannot
stand alone and it is of little valueunless it connects with the piecesbeside it which in turn connect to theother pieces. How many times have you
completed a puzzle only to get to the
end and realize that a piece is
missing. I know I have and when this
happens I feel disappointed because
somehow I know that no matter what
I do with the puzzle it is not what it
is meant to be.
This is the same with humanity.
As long as we all see ourselves as
individual players in life, things in
our world will never improve. We
must appreciate the value of every
person along this journey of life.
I believe that there is great
opportunity for the world religions
to help people see their
interconnectedness. I did a study a
few years ago on the Golden Rule
and was surprised to see how it is an
integral part of so many world
religions.
1) Christians know it from the
New Testament “In everything do to
others as you would have them do to
you; for this is the law and the
prophets” (Matthew 7:12).
2) Buddhists know it from
Samyutta NlKaya v 353 “… a statethat is not pleasing or delightful tome, how could I inflict that uponanother?”3) Muslims would read it as “None
of you (truly) believes until he
wishes for his brother what he
wishes for himself” from Number 13
of Imam “Al-Mawawi’s Forty
Hadiths.
4) It can also be found in African
Native religion, Brahmanism,
Confucianism, Ancient Egyptian,
Hinduism, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto,
Sufism, Sikhism, Yoruba,
Zoroastrianism and many more.
After going over the list it begs the
question “Are we really practising
our faiths”.
If people of all faiths would start
focusing on what we have in
common instead of what divides us
we could put the puzzle together
without any missing pieces.
Humanity is a complete whole and
we are all interconnected.
I would like to end this article with
an Ojibwe prayer:
Spirit of the Universe
We know that in all creation only
the human family has strayed from
the Sacred Way.
We know that we are the ones whoare divided and we are the ones whomust come back together to walk inthe Sacred Way.As we reflect on the Golden Rule
in sacred texts we pray for openness,
for compassionate listening, we pray
for a hunger for new ways of
walking together in the world.
Help us to move forward lifting up
and supporting all our sisters and
brothers of all races and faiths. Inhonouring them we will behonouring the sacred universalspirit.PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2008.

From the Minister’s StudyThe human way and the Sacred Way
Majestic Women’s Institute
meeting was held May 14. Twelve
members met at the Brussels Library
for a mystery tour started by a brief
meeting at JR’s. Last-minute
arrangements were discussed about
the setup for the District annual
meeting to be held May 28 at
Melville Presbyterian Church.
The location of the mystery tour
was Minto Wild Things plant farm
owned and operated by Nina Aprile
and John Harris, a former
journalist3.
While canoeing they realized how
little they knew about the plants and
trees they had seen. They began to
take great interest in plants and a
hobby became a life choice. They
devoted themselves to full-time
perennial gardening. Their
specialties are hostas and clematis
and heritage tomatoes. These are
organic tomatoes not hybrids.
They grow their own plants in a
mix of composted leaves, bark and
vermiculite. To control bugs they use
a mix of one part ammonia, one drop
dish soap, one drop vegetable oil,
and 10 parts water. They spray the
underside of the plant first in case of
discolouration.
Their last piece of advice was that
gardening should be fun and easy.
The next meeting is June 11, a
