The Blyth Destroyers U-16 boys
soccer travelled to play Goderich II
on May 21, on yet another cold and
wet Wednesday night.
Ten minutes into the game
Goderich scored. Goderich widened
the lead when goalie Greg
Roetcisoender came out of the net to
challenge the ball. Goderich forward
came in and scored as the ball
slipped out of the keeper’s hand.
Halfback, Brendon Boven booted
the ball into the corner of Goderich’s
defensive zone and Tolson Carter
gained control of the ball and scored
for Blyth to narrow the gap in the
score making it 2-1. Both teams had
some great shots on net, but neither
team was able to score before the
half-time whistle blew.
Goderich kept on the pressure
after the half-time break and scored
their third goal of the game. Carter
made a beautiful pass in front of the
net and Brent Drost caught a piece
of the ball and chipped it into the
Goderich net to score.
Goderich caught a lucky break
and scored on a corner kick.
Goderich seemed hungry for the ball
and beat Blyth to the ball and was
able to score again.
The final goal of the game showed
some nice teamwork from Blyth duo
Boven and Carter.
Goderich won this soccer match
5-3, the first loss of the season for
Blyth.
Palmerston 91s had an away
game on Tuesday, May 6 against
Guelph V and a home game on
Thursday, May 8 against Guelph
M. In both games the outcome was
unfavourable for the 91s.
Wednesday, May 14 was
scheduled for a game in Stratford
but was cancelled due to rain.
Thursday, May 15 the 91s had a
home game in Palmerston against
Kitchener. The 91s won 13-9.
Destroyers fall to Goderich
The Blyth Barons travelled to
Goderich to face the Orioles
Tuesday, May 13 in Huron County
Fastball League action. This proved
to be an interesting contest as four
members of the current Barons
played with the Orioles last year.
The first pitch of the game from
the Orioles was a bean ball to lead
off hitter Darcey Cook catching both
team’s attention right away.
Ryan Clancy sacrificed Cook to
second with a bunt. Trevor Seip hit a
single to put runners on the corners.
Chris Stewart was called out when
his bunt attempt bounced back and
hit the bat in fair territory. Mike
Bromley went to first on a walk.
Justin Peters grounded out to the first
baseman to end the inning.
Cook took to the mound and
retired the side on a fly and two
ground outs.
Shawn Bromley led off the second
inning with a triple for Blyth. Pat
Cronin followed that up with a single
to put runners on the corners. Cronin
stole second to put both Baron
runners in scoring position. Chad
Haggitt picked up two RBIs with a
hit to right field. Cook ripped a triple
to left centre to bring Haggitt home
and pick up an RBI.
Clancy lined out to the shortstop
for the first out. Seip reached first
with a single and stole second.
Stewart reached first on a fielder’s
choice. Bromley popped up to third
to end the inning with the Barons
scoring three runs to take the early
lead.
In the Oriole half Cook allowed a
single, and two walks, but gave up no
runs.
It was a no-run inning for the
Barons too.
The Orioles got two runs, then the
tying run came on an overthrow at
third base by Barons’ catcher Seip.
In the top of the fourth Clancy
singled to right field but was left on
base.
The Oriole fourth saw Cook and
Seip switch positions. Seip posted a
one-hit, no-run inning.
Bromley led off the fifth with a
single. Peters reached first on the
fielder’s choice. Shawn Bromley
picked up an RBI with a shot that the
third baseman failed to handle.
Haggitt picked up his third RBI on a
hit to right field. Cook reached on an
error by the third baseman but was
left on base after Clancy ground out.
Seip retired the side in the Oriole
half with two strikeouts and a fly-
out. The sixth produced three ground
outs by Seip, Stewart and Steve Cook
to leave the Blyth lead at two.
Seip once again retired the side in
the Oriole half.
In the final inning the Barons
threatened with a single by Peters but
were shut down after a great catch by
the Oriole centre fielder.
Seip finished the game allowing no
runs to secure the Barons’ 5-3
victory.
The Walton Brewers were in town
Friday, May 23.
Cook started on the mound giving
up only a single and a walk.
In the bottom Cook singled and
stole second. Seip dealt the big blow
with a homerun blast for two RBIs.
Mike Bromley stroked a triple. A
Justin Peters single brought Bromley
home. A fly to centre ended the
inning.
On the mound Cook surrendered a
walk but retired the three outs with a
fly ball, ground-out and a strikeout.
Offensively, the team were unable
to add to their score.
The Walton third found Cook
giving up a single and a walk but
otherwise recording the three outs.
Clancy reached base after being hit
by a pitch. Seip hit his second
homerun of the night to record two
more RBIs.
At the end of the third the Barons
had a commanding 5-0 lead.
At the top of the inning Walton
scored six runs on three singles, a
double, triple and homerun, to chase
Cook from the mound with only one
out. Seip came out to record the final
two outs on a strike out and ground
out.
In the Barons’ half Cook singled
and stole his way home with the help
of some Walton errors to tie the
game. Clancy popped out to first to
end the inning.
At the bottom of the inning Seip
led off with a single. Shawn Bromley
reached on a sacrifice bunt with an
error by the second baseman. Mike
Bromley got on base on an error by
the pitcher. Chad Haggitt hit a single
and earned an RBI.
With three runs scoring Blyth was
up 9-7.
Seip retired the Walton batters on
four fly balls and a strikeout.
In the Blyth at bat, after walks to
Clancy and Seip, Shawn Bromley hit
into an inning-ending double play.
Seip retired the Walton batters in
succession, preserving the 9-7
victory.
The Barons play Friday, May 30 at
7:30 p.m. against the Brussels
Tigers.
Catching some air
Spencer Stevenson stuck his landing, despite how terrified
he might have been at the idea, last week at track and field
at East Wawanosh Public School. Stevenson was
attempting to master the rhythm necessary for the triple
jump while his classmates looked on. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Blyth Barons are 3 for 3
The U-14 Blyth boys soccer has
finally decided on a name, the Blyth
Warheads.
The Warheads travelled to Clinton
to play their weekly game of soccer
against Clinton II.
Blyth and Clinton took turns
gaining control of the ball and each
team had some great shots on net.
Blyth’s Wyatt Bearss made some
great saves as goalkeeper to stop his
opponents from scoring. With less
than 30 seconds left in the first half
Clinton was able to score on a corner
kick, taking the narrow lead of 1-0 at
halftime.
Blyth defence left a man
uncovered and Clinton scored, then
scored again on a breakaway. Marc
Dery made a nice pass up the field
and Greg Roetcisoender scored.
Blyth poured on the pressure but
Clinton’s defensive team stood
strong.
Clinton scored a final goal before
the whistle blew to signal the end of
the game. Blyth had their first loss of
the season with a score of 4-1.
“The team played an amazingly
strong first half and the game was
very evenly played by both teams. In
the second half of the game, Blyth
got tired and discouraged after
getting scored on,” said the coach.
“It was nice to see the team get a
goal and keep trying to stay in the
game. This is a strong team and they
just need to learn to focus on the
play and keep in the game when they
are down on the scoreboard.”
U-14s post season’s first loss
The Blyth Lightning U-12 team
travelled to Clinton to take on
United last week.
The weather had cleared up and it
was a good night for a soccer match.
Ryan Nesbitt struck first for the
Lightning, netting one late in the
first half.
Again at the start of the second
half Nesbitt put another one pastthe
Clinton netminder and it was
looking like it would be an easy time
for the Lightning.
However, Clinton came back
strong and scored three in a row to
steal the lead.
Blyth was not to be out done,
though, and late in the game
brothers Dalton and Wyatt Carey
teamed up, with Wyatt scoring to
even the match. Then Megan
Hoggart got into the action, first
feeding the ball to Dalton Carey for
the go-ahead goal. She then scored
one herself. When Wyatt Carey's
shoot was blocked Hoggart put it
away for Blyth.
The Lightning took the 5-3
victory.
