The second game of the season for
the Blyth U-14 boys was played at
Sparling’s field in Blyth on
Thursday, May 15. The weather co-
operated for a great evening of
soccer.
Parents, siblings and fans were
treated to very evenly-matched
soccer game. There were several
scoring opportunities for both sides,
but neither team was able to get on
the scoreboard.
The goalkeepers from each team
made some great saves to prevent the
ball from crossing over the goal line.
Each team earned penalty shots for
handballs in their crease, but were
unsuccessful in scoring a goal.
Wyatt Bearss and Greg
Roetcisoender shared time covering
the net for Blyth and both players
did their part to help earn the
shutout.
With 19 out of 20 Blyth players
present there were almost two full
lines to sub on and off the field. It
was hard to keep everyone into the
game with such a large team, but all
players gave very good effort when
they were on the field.
Coaches said “the players just
need to work on their speed and
be aggressive when working to
get control of the ball. If the
players move up the field together
as a team, instead of individually
when they were heading for
the opponents’ net, they might also
see a few more positive results,” they
said.
The boys travel to Clinton for next
week’s game on May 22.
Blyth’s U-12 Thunder soccer team
got off to a good start with a 3-3 tie
against Lucknow I at the Sparling
field.
Scoring were Quintin Sjaarda and
Rick Pot with two.
On May 13 the team journeyed to
Wingham for a 4-0 victory over the
Wingham Gift Chest team. Sjaarda
scored with a redirect off the post
from Pot into the open net. Ben
Nonkes showed first-rate play with
two goals assisted by Sjaarda, Pot
and Alex Peters.
Sjaarda picked up the final goal in
the game on a shot from outside the
crease through the hands of the
defending goaltender.
Members of the team this year are:
Tyler Boven, Evan Kikkert, Liam
Kikkert, Nonkes, Peters, Pot,
Sjaarda, Eric Steele, Connor Wilts,
Shelby Hakkers, Celena Haskins,
McKayla Nonkes, Jessica Procter,
Charlene Schramm, Hillary
Schramm, Ariya Vellanga, Tina
Vershaeve and Brianna Yuill.
Coach is Clarence Bosma.

Play on
The Blyth U-14 boys hoped to continue their solid play with
a game against Seaforth at home on May 15. It was an
evenly-matched contest that ended with neither team
getting on the scoreboard. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Blyth was host to St. Columban in
this week’s U-16 boys soccer
competion on May 14.
With three players absent from the
game, some U14s did a great job
helping the Destroyers out so there
would be a few subs to give players
a much-deserved break.
It was a very wet, windy and cold
night for the players and fans. Many
fans choose to watch the game from
inside their vehicles, but a few
braved the weather and sat outside
under their blankets and umbrellas.
The players didn’t enjoy these
luxuries and were soaked to the skin,
by the time the soccer game ended.
Jordon Rinn earned an assist for
Blyth when he kicked the ball high
into the air and Tolson Carter took it
into St. Columban’s end to score the
first goal of the night.
For the second half of the game,
Blyth had the wind on their side,
which helped to control their shots.
Blyth took advantage of a corner
kick and Matt Steele earned an assist
passing to Kurtis Kolkman who
booted the ball into the net. It was
unclear at first whether the next play
earned a goal, because when the ball
went over the line, it seemed to just
slowly roll towards the St.
Columban net. The ref declared that
the ball did cross the line and Carter
earned an assist while Kolkman
earned credit for the goal. Rinn and
Kolkman worked together to get the
final goal of the game.
Kolkman earned a hat-trick for his
team.
The final score was a 4-0 victory
for the Blyth Destroyers. Greg
Roetcisoender played a great game
in net for Blyth and earned the
shutout for his team.
Close contest
It was a homegrown rivalry at the Brussels ball diamond last
week when the ASquirts took on the B squad. It was victory
for the latter in this high-scoring contest that ended with a
final tally of 17-16. (Vicky Bremner photo)
