A permanent county household
hazardous waste depot moved a little
closer May 7.
Information presented at Huron
County council’s meeting explained
that the depot is being developed at
the Mid-Huron landfill site with
Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural
Infrastructure Fund assistance.
A recommendation was made that
the county enter into an agreement
with the municipalities that operate
the site for the establishment and
operation of a permanent household
hazardous waste depot.
The planning, agriculture and
public words department
recommended approval.
Huron East councillor Bernie
MacLellan had some questions first.
“Are there not some outstanding
issues with the Mid-Huron site? I
know there are.”
Director of planning Scott Tousaw
said this recommendation was
essentially to allow a lease
agreement. “It will create a legal
framework to develop an operating
plan.”
Admitting that there are details
still needing to be worked out,
Tousaw added, “It’s a bit of a
moving target but the agreement
allows us to proceed and work out
details.”
Councillor Neil Vincent of North
Huron said that there are currently
household hazardous waste
materials going into landfills.
“Neighbours are questioning what is
being put there. We need to
push harder to get things going on
this.”
The recommendation was
approved.
Thanks

Dead Crows and Blue Jays
West Nile Virus is transmitted to birds and humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
Symptoms in birds include convulsions, tremors, head tilt, wing droop, and paralysis.
Huron County residents are urged to report all dead Crows and Blue Jays from now until
the first of October. These species are particularly sensitive to West Nile Virus and are the
only ones that may be picked up by the Health Unit for testing. Report dead Crows and
Blue Jays to the Huron County Health Unit at 519-482-3416 Ext. 2001, or if calling long
distance, 1-877-837-6143 Ext. 2001.
Large birds of other species found dead or when several smaller birds die in one spot may
warrant testing for avian influenza. This is not done through the Health Unit. Please call the
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre at 1-866-673-4781 to inquire about avian
influenza testing.
Dead birds not being picked up should be discarded in the following manner:
• using gloves or a shovel, double bag the bird in plastic bags
• do not touch dead birds with bare hands;
• place the bagged bird out with regular household garbage; and
• wash hands thoroughly.
To find out more, visit www.huroncounty.ca or call the Huron County Health Unit at 519-
482-3416 Ext. 2001 or if calling long distance, dial 1-877-837-6143 Ext. 2001.
