If you can while away the hourssifting through old black and whitefamily photos and relish theoccasional black and white movieTVO might offer on a Saturdaynight, you might be anxious to catchJerry McDonnell’s photography
exhibit entitled ASF: Studies in
Black and White at the Goderich
Co-op Gallery for the month of May.
Many photographers in Huron
County are already familiar with
McDonnell’s work. He and his wife
Carol are the driving force behind
January’s very successful photo
exhibit. Huron County at Work.
Participants are encouraged tophotograph ordinary people, sometimes caught off guard, goingabout their day, just doing their job.The culmination of this showportrays a community workingsuccessfully at tasks everyone
recognizes, but might not appreciate.
Not happy photographing
personal events and recording
family occasions, McDonnell sought
out in the 1960s, old buildings and
subject matter deemed, less than
perfect. “Decay is part of the cycle
of life and death” Jerry claims “and
both deserve to be recorded for their
historical importance and theirartistic value.”A teaching career, communityinvolvement, and raising a familytook time away from his passion forphotography. Encouragement froman artist friend, 10 years ago, forced
McDonnell to jump back in with
both feet. Courses at Haliburton
School of the Arts and the digital
photo imaging workshop at
Elizabeth’s Art Gallery have helped
to expand horizons in the areas of
composition and technique. Both
film and digital cameras have been
used to produce images in
McDonnell’s work. When using black and white film,McDonnell likes to experiment withinfrared photography, producingghostlike results. This film must behandled in complete darkness. A redfilter on the camera blocks out most
of the visible light and the film
reacts to the non-visible parts of the
spectrum. Water comes out black,
while plants with chlorophyll glow
vibrantly.
The results are startling. When
using colour film a dark yellow
filters is used turning foliage red and
the sky a deep blue. All of these
affects are achieved when the sun is
shining brightly. This film too, like
the black and white, must be loadedand developed in complete darkness.“Choosing to shoot in black andwhite,” McDonnell said “forces theviewer to look at shapes and form.Too often we are won over by colourand neglect the effort the
photographer has gone to, trying to
create a certain atmosphere”.
McDonnell’s work is an exhibit

Confusion for Huron East council
and its employees has them starting
from scratch with the new exhaust
fan for the Brussels Fire Hall.
While a quotation was initially
obtained from Somers Electric of
Brussels back in February, council
opted to get a second opinion. Fire
chief Marty Bedard obtained a
second quotation from Elligsen
Electric in Walton for $2,460.00,
slightly under the Somers price of
$2,734.93.
Bedard, however, recommended
that council accept the higher
quotation from Somers. His
reasoning was that Somers operates
from Brussels and that would sway
him, seeing as the prices were
relatively close.
This comes hot on the heels of
council’s last three meetings, where
a “buy local” tendering process had
been discussed, but nothing
officially had been approved.
However, there was confusion
among the councillors, as to
whether the tendering process had
been followed correctly.
However, when the issue had first
come up that the Brussels Fire Hall
needed a new exhaust fan, council
had asked Bedard to obtain a
quotation to get an idea of price, and
then another price as a second
opinion, while no official tenders
had been called.
At first, before this had been
discovered, councillors argued that
tenders had been handled unfairly
with both companies.
Arguments claimed that Somers
had been treated unfairly, and that
since they were the only company to
answer tenders in the first round,
that it would be unfair to them to
consider a second tender. Once the
price Somers submitted became
public record, councillors also
argued that it wouldn’t be difficult
to know what to bid under to win the
tender, again suggesting unfair
treatment to Somers.
However, the lowest tender
should win the job, was the
argument supporting Elligsen.
All this discussion, however, was
moot when the actual process that
Huron East had followed became
clear and council decided to start
over again and to do it right this
time.
Council then passed a motion to
call for tenders for an exhaust fan
for the fire hall.
There was discussion, however,
about whether the hall might benefit
from an air exchanger, which
councillor Bill Siemen argued could
be better for the environment, and a
better overall solution for the air
quality problems the hall has been
facing.
That suggestion was defeated
after a recommendation came from
chief building official Paul Josling
against the use of an air exchanger.
He said that the carbon emissions
from the fire hall would likely clog
up the air exchanger and that it
wasn’t a good choice for that
particular job.
