It was a cool wet night on
Wednesday, May 7 when the Blyth
and Lucknow U-16 teams met for
the first soccer match of the season
in Lucknow. After a little confusion
about which field to play on, the
referee announced an early start to
the game, due to the uncertain
weather.
Tolson Carter took a beautiful
corner kick and scored a goal to get
Blyth on the scoreboard.
It wasn’t long before Lucknow
scored to tie up the game.
Blyth’s Carter took another corner
kick and after touching a few
players, the ball bounced into
Lucknow’s net for Blyth to take the
lead. Some real teamwork occurred
to gain the next goal. Brendon Boven
booted the ball up the field and
Jessie Pot passed the ball up the field
to Brent Drost, who broke away
from the Lucknow defence and
scored.
The second half saw the players
losing steam and slowing down a bit.
Blyth has a small team this year with
only two subs. With rain making the
field a slippery turf to play on there
were lots of tumbles from both
teams in their quest to gain control of
the ball.
Blyth gained an advantage when
Lucknow got called for a handball in
the crease. Carter took the penalty
shot and scored to gain a third goal
or hattrick. This goal boosted Blyth’s
confidence. Matt Steele obtained the
ball from his opponents and scored
from outside the corner of the
eighteen yard line. Minutes later,
Drost passed the ball up to his
teammate and Steele scored another
goal.
It was a 6-1 victory for Blyth, a
great start for the soccer season. All
the players worked hard to gain
control of the ball and passed the ball
to their teammates, taking some
great shots on net. Blyth’s core
defensive line consisting of Jacob
Nonkes, Ross MacDonald and Mark
Siertsema did a fantastic job of
getting the ball out of their end and
really did their part to help the team
earn this win. Goalkeeper, Greg
Roetcisoender did a great job
covering the net and made a lot of
great saves to stop that slippery ball
from crossing Blyth’s goal line.
Coach Rob Kolkman was very
pleased with the team’s performance
during this first match of the season.
Another year and another
Mother’s Day motocross in Walton
as over 850 participants competed in
the Motovan.com Ontario Provincial
Motocross Series event over the
weekend.
Competitors made their way to
Walton all the way from Michigan,
New York, Timmins and Alberta in
the amateur class and as far as South
Africa and British Columbia in some
of the professional classes.
There were several local riders
who finished in the top 10 of their
classes starting with Mitchell
Godkin of Walton, who finished
second in the seven to 11-year-old
85cc class.
Brussels’ own William King
placed second in the GP Beginner
class, while Chad Henderson of
Bluevale finished sixth in the MX-1
Beginner class, just ahead of Steve
Van Amersfoort of Blyth, who
finished seventh.
Brett Courtney of Blyth finished
fourth in the MX-2 Beginner
class.
Blyth was host to the first game of
the season for the U-14 boys on May
8 at the Sparling soccer fields
against their opponents from St.
Columban.
Blyth looked great in their brand
new gold and royal blue soccer
jerseys as they eagerly hit the field.
St. Columban played a very strong
first half, as they easily outshot
Blyth and seemed to show more
control of the ball. Blyth’s
goalkeeper, Greg Roetcisoender was
challenged to make stop after stop to
keep Blyth in the game.
Blyth players kept digging for the
ball and showed some great
teamwork to score the first goal of
the game. Forward Derek deBoer
obtained control of the ball and shot
the ball up the field toward the net.
Half-back Kody Tachauer passed the
ball a little closer and forward Austin
Chaffe booted the ball into St.
Columban’s net.
A short time later, St. Columban
had a lucky break and earned a
penalty shot. Blyth’s keeper punched
the ball out of the net, but St.
Columban rushed in towards the net
a little quicker than their opponents
and chipped the ball in.
Blyth played stronger in the
second half. Roetcisoender scored
after stealing the ball away from the
opposition. This gave Blyth players
a great boost in their confidence and
they poured on the pressure with
several scoring opportunities. St.
Columban had a handball in their
crease and Roetcisoender scored to
widen the lead.
Wyatt Bearss covered the net
during the second half. He made
several great saves and even stopped
a penalty shot to help out his team.
The final whistle blew and Blyth
won their first match of the season
with a score of 3-1.
Coaches Mary Ann and Brent
Drost were pleased with the team’s
performance. “No one on the team
tried to hog the ball, and all players
worked together as a team passing
the ball up the field in their quest to
score a goal,” they said.
Defensive players Lucas Frawley,
Alec Lorentz, Micah Nonkes and
Josh Raynard played a strong game,
constantly attempting to clear the
ball away from their net and working
the ball up the field to their
teammates, said Mary Ann.
U-16s down Lucknow 6-1
On Friday, May 9 the newly-
formed Blyth Barons had their
season opener against the Atwood
Avengers.
Darcey Cook took to the mound.
After giving up a triple to the lead-
off batter Cook was able to get the
next three out to end the inning
down by one.
Cook would help out his cause by
leading off the Baron’s half of the
inning with a single of his own.
Ryan Clancy sacrificed Cook to
second with a bunt and Cook would
come home on a single by Mike
McDonald to tie the game. Chris
Stewart followed that up with a
triple to bring McDonald in and
come home on a sacrifice fly by
Mike Bromley.
Justin Peters grounded out for the
final out of the inning with the home
team up 3-1.
In the second inning Cook
surrendered two walks and a hit that
would inch Atwood one run closer.
The Barons failed to answer as the
bottom side of the order went in
succession. In the third inning
Atwood scored two runs on three
singles and a base on balls to take a
4-3 lead. Cook gave way to Trevor
Seip on the mound after a 2 1/3
innings. Seip recorded the final two
outs.
Blyth battled back reaching base
on five bases on balls and a single
and RBI by Cole Stewart. The
Barons scored a total of five runs to
re-take the lead.
In the top of the fourth Seip gave
up one run on two hits to keep
Atwood three back.
Cook led off for the bottom of the
first inning on a walk. Seip bunted
and Cook advanced, then reached
third on the steal. McDonald got his
second RBI bringing Cook home for
the only run of the inning.
Atwood failed to answer in the
fifth only having the lead-off batter
to reach and the rest go down in
order.
The fifth inning saw Mike
Bromley lead off with a single
followed by a triple by Peters. Cole
Stewart hit a sacrifice fly to bring
Peters home and record his second
RBI of the night. Shawn Bromley
tripled and Cook brought him home
to record an RBI of his own. The
inning closed with four runs and a
13-5 victory.
It was a strong outing for the
opening game and the team was
impressed with the large turnout of
fans to support them.
The next home game is this
Friday, May 16 at 7:30 against the
Walton Brewers.
Solid start
It promises to be a great season for the Blyth Barons and
their fans if their opening game on Friday is any indication.
