The Citizen, 2008-04-24, Page 21A Wingham man was sent to jailafter facing charges in Wingham’sprovincial court April 17. William Coates pled guilty at the
March court of one charge of assault,
one of resisting arrest and one of
possession of stolen property valued
at under $5,000. Facts and sentencing
were put off for a month so that a pre-
sentence report could be prepared.
Attorney for the Crown Clayton
Conlan said that Wingham police
were contacted regarding an
accusation of harrassment on June 26.
Coates was in a parking lot and when
police tried to speak with him he
began yelling obsenities, said Conlan.
They attempted to arrest him for
public mischief but Coates pulled
away from the officer.
When police spoke to the victim
she said that Coates had pushed her
into the wall and smashed her head on
the floor.
The possession charge dates to Nov.
26, when police responded to a
vehicle crash. Nobody was at the
scene but a canine unit led police to a
property. Footwear impressions weretaken and it was determined thatCoates had been in possession of thestolen truck, said Conlan.
Defence counsel Tim Macdonald
described his client as a “young man
who unfortunately has had a number
of contacts with the police.” Howevr,
he, added, that most of the
convictions were property-related and
that the assault and resisting police
charges were the first of that kind.
Noting that Coates had been taking
steps to re-direct his life, Macdonald
said, “He is improving. The problem
of course is his record.” He asked that
for Coates to continue making
positive changes Judge R.G.E. Hunter
consider house arrest.
The judge didn’t agree however. He
sentenced Coates to 45 days on the
possession charge, 15 days
consecutive for the assault and 15
days concurrent for resisting arrest for
a total of 60 days.
He will be on probation for 12
months.
MARIJUANA PRODUCTION
Raymond Law of Brussels pledguilty to marijuana production. Federal Crown Mike Donnelly saidthat police had been called to Law’s
residence on Feb. 1 regarding a
domestic dispute. Once inside, he
said, they found four small plants,
approximately six inches high.
Law, Donnelly said, has a
“substantial record” which includes
three prior drug-related convictions.
Macdonald said that the plants were
“clearly for personal use”, but added
that his client obviously had
substance abuse issues to deal with.
Law was fined $1,000, which must
be paid in six months. He is
prohibited from owning weapons for
10 years.
OVER 80
RIDE programs brought two men
before the court.
Shawn Tedesco of Wingham pled
guilty to driving with over 80 mg of
alcohol in 100 ml of blood. He was
charged Feb. 16 in North Huron.
Breathalizer readings were 190 and
80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
Jeffrey Wright of Teeswater wascharged Feb. 15 in North Huron. Hisbreathalizer readings were 120 and100 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
They were both fined $750 to be
paid in six months. Their licences
were suspended for one year.
FINED
A Bluevale man pled guilty to
driving with a suspended licence in
his possession. He was fined $500.
ASSAULT
A Brussels woman pled guilty toassault. Conlan said that during anargument the victim was yelling andscreaming at the accused, Mariann
Bone, who “over-reacted and grabbed
the victim’s shirt collar with both
hands and pushed her.
Bone has no record. She was
granted a conditional discharge and
was placed on probation for 12
months. She is prohibited from
owning weapons for five years.
