At their April 15 meeting, Morris-Turnberry councillors heard a request for a donation to help the committee hosting the 2008 International Plowing Match (IPM) at Teeswater. Don and Liz Stobo from the 2008 organizing committee told councillors that where once a county sought an IPM as a way to raise money for their community, today the committee must raise money in order to put on the big outdoor show. The match will be held on farms on the north and east edges of Teeswater Sept. 16-20. “We have to raise $1.5 million to put on the match,” said Don Stobo. “So far we have raised $1.2 million.” Liz Stobo said that neighbouring municipalities (Morris-Turnberry is the nearest Huron County municipality) have been supporting the committee in gifts of either money or “in kind” services. North Huron, for instance, will provide treatment for sewage. It’s also possible to support a portion of the event that a council has a particular connection with, said Don Stobo. Liz Stobo pointed out the education program which expects to attract 16,000 students during the week of the match. The Stobos said they did not expect an immediate decision from council. While greeting the couple enthusiastically, councillors said they would discuss the possibility of support at a later date.
