The Citizen, 2008-04-24, Page 12Last week there was a mistake in
this column regarding Leona
Snyder. She is a resident of Seaforth
Manor.
I apologize for the error.
As I delivered mail this past week,
I noticed a lot of mailboxes that
have suffered the result of useless
destruction by people who don’t
have much to do.
Returning from a working trip to
Ottawa is Judy Emmrich. She was in
Ottawa on business for the Rural
Postal Carriers Union and attended
many meetings. Of course, there is
always free time and time for fun, to
make the trip enjoyable.
While she was away, I filled in
delivering mail. On my journey, I
saw many changes in the area. The
former Jackson farm at the corner in
Walton has had the foundations of
the buildings taken away and or
buried and all that remains is a
garden shed. The ground is all level
and ready for the planting season.
The former home of Martin and
Catherine Baan was taken down as
well. The bricks were all removed,
then a crew of Mennonite workers
came in and took down the structure
all in one day. The foundation still
remains and will have something
done to it in the future.
Congratulations to the Seaforth
PeeWee C girls hockey team as they
are Provincial Gold hockey champs.
Local connections include Abby
McGavin, daughter of Brian and
Shelley McGavin, Shayna Melady,
daughter of Pat and Cathy Melady,
both granddaughters of Neil and
Marie McGavin and Kassidy Eckert,
daughter of Steve and Tracy Eckert
and granddaughter of Dianne
Machan and Gary Bennett. Also on
the team was also Farren Goos,
daughter of Mike and Lorrie Goos
and granddaughter of Ken and Betty
Glanville. The championships were
played in Mississauga and theyplayed six games, losing only gamethree to North Bay, then fightingtheir way back to win gold. The girlsdefeated teams from Cambridge,Cornwall, Carleton Place, TorontoLakeshore and Mount Bridges. The team returned Sundayafternoon and after having acelebratory ride on the Seaforth firetruck through town, they went to the
home of Brian and Shelley McGavin
for a team party. Congratulations to
the girls and their team.
A note of interest is that the
Seaforth Bantam girls hockey team
also won Provincial gold that
weekend and Seaforth’s Midget and
Atom teams also qualified for
Provincial play and made it to the
quarter-final play.
Little Lerissa Stevenson
celebrated her first birthday in style
having a pool party at the Vanastra
Rec Center. All her family and
friends were on hand for swimming,
then cake.
Celebrating her birthday as well
was Patty Banks at the home of her
son Tanner and Loni Horst in
London. They had their first
barbecue of the season. Attending
were Jim Cook, Cassandra Banks
and Dave Haney, Brandi Leslie and
daughters Brooke and Tyler. Patty
shared her special day with the
newest member of the family, an
English bulldog puppy, named
Charlotte, who was happy with the
attention she received.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Robert Locking who
passed suddenly last week.
We offer get-well wishes to those
in hospital including Carl Subject,
Bill Craig and George Langlois.
Off for his last session of school
for a diesel mechanic is Curtis Ryan.
He is attending school in London
and we hope he does well.
It was the spring show for the
Grey Bruce Singers and many local
folks made the trip to Hanover for
the concert. Entitled, Love is in the
Air, it was a collection of popular
love songs and was themed around
the popular Love Boat Show. A
familiar name to many and part of
the group is Bruce McDonald, son
of the late Donald McDonald and
Marilyn.
Heading off to enjoy the concertwere Marilyn McDonald, Jack andDonna Knight, Gerry and AnneRyan and Barb Tervit. Also enjoyingthe show was Leona McDonald,Isabelle Wheeler, Margery Huetherand friend Annette. The reports arethat it was a wonderful show. Our sympathies are extended tothe family of Henry Reesor, whopassed away last week. Henry and
his sisters, Naomi and Ina, lived on
the 16th of Grey for many years
before moving to Carthage a couple
of years ago.
Having an unexpected visitor last
week were Howard and Audrey
Hackwell. Cousin David Hackwell
from Florida drop by to visit. He is
here to catch up with family, and to
help celebrate an old friend’s special
birthday.
David has lots of relatives in the
area including sister Audrey
McLlwain, and other siblings Reed
and June.It was a beautiful day on Saturdayfor the annual Brett to Brian’sDrowning Dog Canoe Rally. It isheld in Seaforth and put on by BrettLee and Brian Melady. PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2008.
It was busy around Duff’s United
Church on the weekend. It was clean
up outside the church on Saturday
morning and a great job was done by
those working.
Work is being done on the manse
with the veranda railings being
replaced. It is really looking nice.
The morning service at Duff’s had
a good attendance.
Confirmation will be held April
27th at both Duff’s and Bluevale
churches.
Rev. Sandra Yule will be away on
continuing education from April 29
to May 5. Leave messages on the
machine.
Someone is needed to cut grass at
the church. Contact Neil McGavin
for info.
A fish fry will be held May 3 at the
church. It is advance tickets only.
Sunday evening was the
covenanting service for Rev. Sandra
Yule held at Duff’s United Church
for the Walton Bluevale Pastoral
Charge. It was presided over by Flo
Cartwright of the Huron Presbytery
and assisted by members of the
confirmants class and Sandra Cable
of Brussels United Church.
The call to worship was read by
Ryan Baan and the opening prayer
by Ben Underwood.
Joyce Johnston, chairperson of the
joint board, presented Rev. Sandra
and expressed the words of
welcome.
The presentation of the symbols
was assisted by Alexis Shaw, Kyle
Machan, William Rinngenberg,
Allison Baan, Teresa Baan, Edward
Glanville, Ursina and Michele
Studhalter, MacKenzie McGavin,

Shaw.
The prayers of the people were
given by Jacob McGavin. Scripture

Lord’s Prayer.
Rev. Sandra was presented with a
bouquet of flowers from the joint
congregations. It was a lovely
service with over 60 people in
attendance.
Following the service a social time
and lunch was served.
Spare change?
Members of Duff’s United Church Sunday school have been collecting change in cans for the
mission and service fund for a few months. This past Sunday, they held a ‘can opening party’
during the service and while enjoying snacks they tallied up the money. Their goal was to raise
$60 and they were excited to learn they had far exceeded that goal raising $222.98 for mission
work, both locally and around the world through the United Church of Canada. (Photo submitted)
