Carly Whitfield of Belgrave logged one goal and two assists for the Bantam team, while Heidi Raynard of Belgrave notched two shutouts in six games for the PeeWees and Abby McGavin of Walton found the back of the net five times for the PeeWee team. Perhaps still taking it all in, or maybe just plain shy, the three girls don’t have much to say about the tournament, other than a few one- word descriptions, like “awesome” and “fun” and “competitive.” Competitive is right. Between both teams, the largest goal differential was three goals, and even that game was closer than it sounded, with an empty net goal finally putting it out of reach in the final minutes of the game. While Whitfield and Raynard celebrated this victory in their second year with the Stars, McGavin finally won gold in her fourth year in Seaforth, going to the provincial championship all four years, but coming up with bronze, until now. All three agreed that they were nervous before games, with nerves intensifying when games got tighter, but not enough to distract them from the game at hand. “When it was really close, you got really nervous, and it was tough,” said McGavin. “But everyone on the bench was cheering and it really ended up pushing you harder.” With the Bantam team receiving a late invitation to the tournament, taking another team’s place as they had to drop out, they went in as underdogs, being viewed as a team that wasn’t even supposed to be there, eventually coming out on top. Manager Anne Marie Bedard said the tournament was “the most exciting thing I’ve ever experienced in organized sports.” Both teams blanked the competition, the PeeWees against Mt. Brydges and the Bantams against South Point by scores of 2-0. The tournament was described by parents as constant work, with rarely a lull where the players could catch their breath. They say they’ll be playing hockey again next season. McGavin hopes to return to the Stars while Raynard and Whitfield have yet to make a decision. SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2008. Continued from page 1 recreation guide. “It was my understanding that this went to everyone so it would get the word out. Then I find out that people didn’t see it.” He also said that the pickup involves more than residents realize as the Ministry restrictions require better sorting than had been done in the past. The group left the meeting with council’s promise that they would re-visit the issue that night. Snell said that he had heard support for what council had done too. “For what it’s worth.” MacGowan noted that leaving the refuse on the road is actually a contravention of the Highway Traffic Act. “Whatever we do needs to be decided now,” said McClinchey. Nesbitt said he felt council had made the right decision and should stick to it. “I’ve had no negative feedback in Blyth.” All agreed that educating the public is going to be important and Snell offered to look into a policy from another municipality. MacGowan said that there was nothing “reasonable” that could be done for this spring, though there would be pickup in the fall. He added that he was interested in looking at options such as the craft bags. Lightning PeeWee Girls crowned Ontario champs Continued from page 1 cemetery and completion of the Optimist ball park. White said there are lots of projects that will be completed this year that have been on-going, such as a parks master plan. “I’m happy to get these wrapped up.” The township no longer contracts to Veolia, so there will be a pickup purchased for the water department. White said the budget will be posted on the township website for a period of time. She encourages people to contact her with ques- tions.
