The usual spring-breakup
problems with rural roads is being
added to in Morris-Turnberry by the
heavy loads of farm equipment,
municipal councillors heard at their
April 1 meeting.
Councillor Paul Gowing noted
that there is a lot of heavy
agricultural equipment on the roads
this time of the year. Livestock
farmers are moving manure to the
fields to be spread while cash crop
farmers are moving grain off the
farm, he said.
This heavy traffic caused the
crown to be lost on the road and
water to pool on the surface rather
than run off, he said.
Barry O’Kraftka agreed that the
heavy farm traffic causes problems
this time of year.
Causing even bigger problems on
the day of the meeting were flooding
problems which had closed four
roads in the municipality. “I could
probably name about 20 roads
where we have wash-outs,”
O’Kraftka said. While at the
meeting he received a call about
further damage.
The municipality will have to
replace its 2005 pickup truck used
for road patrols after it was in
collision with three bulls on March
25. A group of 10 animals had
wandered onto the road where
O’Kraftka was involved in a winter
patrol.
