HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-04-10, Page 31By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe year at the Branch is quicklycoming to an end. The month ofApril is when elections are held atthe general meeting. This year it’s on
April 22 at 7 p.m.
Then the year finishes at the end of
May and the new officers take their
elected positions. The Branch is
always looking for new comrades to
join the executive and we encourage
them to think about coming out and
helping the Branch out for a year.
Nomination chairman is comrade
Deb Cann, so give her a call at 519-
887-9249 if you are interested.
The Branch is supporting the
Brussels Public School Grade 8
graduation class in their fundraising
by providing the place for their
euchre parties every other
Wednesday afternoon. They had
seven tables of players this past
week, up one table from the last
time.
Winners for the most lone hands
were Shirley Stewart and Olave
Little. The high scorers were John
Pollard and Beryl Smith. The low
scorers were Larry Dowler and Ross
Bennett. There are prizes, lunch and
draw chances and the admission is
only $2. Come out and support the
endeavors of our young people.
Thursday evening saw the Huron
County Dairy Producers have an
information meeting for their
members at the Branch.
The Thursday night darts had 14
people taking aim at the boards. The
first-place team was Tim Harrison
and Sandra Josling. Coming in
second were Harry Smith, Catrina
Josling and Gord Jacklin. The high
shots of the night were by Kaye
Smith with 109 and John Harrison
with 125.
The Friday night supper of
Salisbury steak had just a small
crowd but this was expected because
of a busy meal week in Brussels.
This week will be pork chops.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
saw 13 tables hoping to be the
winners of the day. The first-place
team was Willis Potter and Betty
Leedie with 80 points. There was a
tie for second with each team having
70 points. Marie Stute, Joanne
Machan, Neil Hatt, and Edna
McLellan split the remaining prize
money.
The low prize went to Edith P. and
Georgina E. with 29 points. The lone
hand prizes went to Lorna for the
ladies and Carman Pollock for the
men.
Euchre is every two weeks.
Attending Royal Canadian Legion
District public speaking from
Brussels on the weekend was
Delayna Smith. The event was held
at the Elmira Legion on Saturday.
Delayna was speaking in the Grades
1-3 category with her speech, The
Trials and Tribulations of the Smith
Farm. Delayna placed first in the
division and was thrilled with theexperience. The next level of competition isarea speaking and will be held inBrussels on April 19 at Brussels
legion. Unfortunately, Delayna will
not be able to attend due to a
previous commitment but she is
thrilled to have had the opportunityto meet so many new friends and tolearn so much from hearing the otherspeeches.A reminder that the Brussels
Cadet Corps still has cookbooks for
sale at the Branch. Cadets are stillcollecting pop cans and returnablebottles at the Branch on Tuesdayevenings. They appreciate thesupport of everyone who has
dropped off bags of returnables and
cans. The Sunday night dance at theBranch saw a crowd of almost 100enjoy the music of the Red RascalBand. It was a wonderful evening
with great music.
Huron East council is just one step
away from finalizing its budget.
After lengthy discussion and an
in-camera session at its April 1
meeting, council hopes to have the
budget finalized by the end of the
next meeting on April 15.
Treasurer Brad Knight had been
waiting until March 31 to make any
further moves on the budget, as the
municipality was waiting for an
answer on infrastructure funding for
the Brussels storm sewer project; an
application that was eventually
denied.
The $627,500 the municipality
was expecting in infrastructure
funding had to be removed from the
budget, as it was budgeted for, but
not approved by the government.
However, $1,469,232 in road and
bridge funding is coming Huron
East’s way that Knight
recommended council put toward
the Brussels storm sewer project.
Knight expressed his confusion
over getting denied funding under
the third installment of rural
infrastructure funding. There was
also frustration concerning the town
of Goderich receiving $2.9 million
towards the accessibility of its town
hall.
Huron-Bruce received
$10,022,750 in infrastructure
funding. However, when it came to
fixing roads and bridges, Huron
East’s $1.4 million was third just to
the two counties, Huron and Bruce,
with Kincardine coming in just
under Huron East with $1,358,588.
Knight proposed to use this
funding to cover $809,000 of the
Brussels project, the Jamestown
Road repaving, which was dropped
last minute from 2007 budget,
$188,500 in bridge work and
$341,500 in additional repaving.
There are budgetary impacts from
the tenders for gravel resurfacing,
dust control and grass cutting that
were all opened in late March as
well. Gravel resurfacing came in
$100,000 over what the
municipality had budgeted for.
However, while Knight was
hoping to have the budget adopted at
the April 1 meeting, he will have to
wait. Council hopes to have the
budget finalized at its April 15
meeting.

Well done
Delayna Smith, a Grey
Central Public School student
took first place in the Grade 1-
3 division of public speaking
at the legion’s district
competition in Elmira this past
weekend. The victory allows
Smith to move on to the
provincials to be held April 19
in Brussels. Unfortunately, the
youngster has “a date with
Mickey she would not miss for
the world,” said her mom,
Shelly.
