enemies, do good to those who hate
you, bless those who curse you, pray
for those who mistreat you.” (Lu
6:27f)
Paul said something similar,
“Bless those who persecute you;
bless and do not curse.” (Romans
12:14)
James considered cursing poor use
of the tongue, which he described as
a ‘restless evil, full of deadly
poison’. He remarked, “With the
tongue we praise our Lord and
Father, and with it we curse men,
who have been made in God’s
likeness. Out of the same mouth
come praise and cursing. My
brothers, this should not be.” (Jas
3:9f)
Job is an Old Testament sage
whose name is practically
synonymous with suffering. When
he had lost all his wealth, offspring,
and his body was covered with
painful sores from head to toe, his
wife advocated cursing as the
appropriate response.
“Are you still holding on to your
integrity? Curse God and die!”
Job refused to curse, insisting,
“You are talking like a foolish
woman. Shall we accept good from
God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:9f)
Despite our lowly station, we
mortals can be pretty quick to
presumptively curse whatever
doesn’t suit us. I’m no angel; I
certainly have no-where near the
status of an archangel. Yet one
canonical writer notes, “But even
the archangel Michael, when he was
disputing with the devil about the
body of Moses, did not dare to bring
a slanderous accusation against him,
but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’”
(Jude 1:9) So instead of cursing a
tumour (or whatever spiritual
association it may represent)
directly, the better approach would
seem to be to ask God to deal with it,
rather than abrogating that disposal-
authority to ourselves.
So we can seize such situations as
opportunities to pray; to proclaim
Jesus’ healing name, and apply
God’s promises, humbly requesting
His intervention. Jesus viewed
someone’s being born blind as an
opportunity for God to work, rather
than as a reason to try to attach
blame. “This happened so that the
work of God might be displayed in
his life.” (Jn 9:3)
His brother James, as an
alternative to using the tongue to
curse, advised prayer: “And the
prayer offered in faith will make the
sick person well; the Lord will raise
him up. If he has sinned, he will be
forgiven. Therefore confess your
sins to each other and pray for each
other so that you may be healed...”
(Jas 5:15f)
To curse is to suppose our own
words carry ultimate power. But
really, at the last it’s God’s word
about a situation that prevails. Isaiah
recognized this in our opening
quote: “The grass withers and the
flowers fall, but the word of our God
stands forever.” (Is 40:8) Quoting
that very passage, the apostle Peter
added that it is this same word of
God that can bring us new birth out
of this realm of decay,
disintegration, cancers, and all that’s
perishable: “For you have been born
again, not of perishable seed, but of
imperishable, through the living and
enduring word of God.” (1Pe 1:23)
The blessing of faith in Jesus is
the final solution - and answer - to
the damage wrought by sin’s curse.
