(Vicky Bremner photo) Huron County’s emergency services manager David Lew is going to be getting some advice on handling calls in winter weather. Councillors addressed information at the April 2 meeting regarding concerns about requests for transfers during storms when roads have been closed. Hospitals have asked for an emergent patient to be transported to a larger centre for definitive care. Lew had contacted other EMS managers to see if they had been in similar situations and if they have a policy to deal with it. Two pieces of relevant legislation noted. A section of the Criminal Code states “Every one who undertakes, or has the authority to direct how another person does work or performs a task is under a legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm to that peron, or any other person, arising from that work or task.”A section of the OccupationalHealth and Safety Act states in part that an employer shall take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker.” When the topic came up for discussion at committee the general consensus was that in adverse weather conditions it wasn’t prudent to transport a patient from one place to another. Lew was authorized to get a legal opinion. Councillor Deb Shewfelt of Goderich sought some clarification. “Certainly from a legal side we shouldn’t, but there is also a moral side.” Warden John Bezaire of Central Huron said that discussion had been around emergent care. “There are hospitals asking for a patient to be moved from one hospital to another. It was felt that as long as a patient had sufficient care where they were they should remain there.” Recipients The Jeremy Austin Memorial Award was presented to Blyth Bantams Matt Popp and Adam Cronin at the annual awards night.
