Road work
Last week 25 teams took to the pavement at St.
Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton for
a chance to be crowned school champions at its
annual road hockey tournament. Students were
asked to bring a non-perishable food item for
local charities to participate. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
THE EDITOR,
The Huron CNIB Focus on
Crocus Campaign for 2008
was a huge success. The
campaign raised funds by
selling pots of crocus. Funds
thus raised will help the
CNIB provide service to the
273 clients in Huron County
who are blind, partially blind
or deaf blind.
Of course, the campaign
could not have succeeded
without the help of many
businesses, food stores,
malls, nursing homes, credit
unions and hospitals where
we had displays and sold
crocus. The displays were
served by many volunteers –
especially members of Lions
Clubs from Goderich,
Wingham, Auburn, Seaforth,
Blyth, Londesborough,
Clinton, Vanastra and Exeter.
Lions truly are the “knights
of the blind.”
I trust that everyone
who helped in any way –
either selling or buying
crocus – recognize that their
help is important and is
appreciated.
Anyone who missed the
Focus on Crocus but wants to
help would be welcome on
our fundraising Walk Toward
Independence at the
Menesetung Trail in
Goderich on May 25.
Sincerely,
Bob Fischer.
Letter to the editor
THE EDITOR,Once again the BrusselsOptimist Club was rewardedwith the generosity of ourvery supportive community.
Our annual dinner and
auction was another huge
success on Saturday night
with the proceeds going to
Make a Wish and community
betterment.
During the event I received
an envelope, but in my haste I
did not open it. Upon opening
the letter on Sunday I realized
this letter was intended to be
read to the crowd gathered on
Saturday night. I would like
to share this letter to you now:
“To the members of the
Brussels Optimist club and
the Brussels Community,
There are no words or
feeling that can describe the
support you have offered myparents (Pat and George)these past few months. It hasbeen a very difficult time andthe support that has been
there from this community is
nothing short of amazing.
Talking with my dad this
week he remarked to me that
he could not believe how
much had been done for Mom
and him since he has been in
the hospital. I told him that
we were so thankful but not
truly surprised as in life what
goes around comes around.
We received in return what we
have given not because at any
time do we expect it back, but
we do things to help others
because it is the right thing to
do.
One only has to attend a
function like tonight (and like
so many others in thiscommunity) to know howincredible Brussels is forhelping others. The people ofBrussels offer their support
time and time again because it
is a caring and supportive
village with a huge heart.
My parents are very lucky
to have called Brussels home
for the past 40 years. These
past few months have been
made easier on my dad
knowing all the support thathas been offered to him andmy mom while he is takingtherapy in Stratford. We know he is anxious to
get home because as everyone
knows he has a hard time
doing nothing. (Thank
goodness he has two
grandsons to talk hockey
with).
People have a choice in life
to sit on the sidelines or to
participate and get involvedin making life better.Congratulations on makinglife better for so many. I knowsometimes we take things in
life for granted but never take
for granted how lucky you are
all to live in this community
and call Brussels home.
From mom and dad and my
family, thank you from the
bottom of our hearts.
Susan, Bill, Curtis, Maurissa
and Brent.”At this time I would like tosincerely apologize to Susanand Bill for not taking time onSaturday night to read the
letter. Obviously two people
may be required to
temporarily do the job that
George made look easy.
Get well soon George, we
need you back.

THE EDITOR,
Soccer is now a go in
Brussels this year. The
Brussels Minor soccer
executive have been very
fortunate that two people who
have done a lot for soccer in
Brussels in the past have
offered to fill the position of
ref-in-chief. Neither wanted to
see soccer die in Brussels.
We want to say a huge
thanks to Abi Corbett, who has
no children in soccer, and Mike
Thomas, who brought soccer to
Brussels in 1990, for their
dedication to the sport. As
well, thank you to the people
who have said they will be
taking the referee course
course for their time and
commitment too. Without these
people it would not be possible
to run our league.
This spring and summer
when you are enjoying
watching the kids playing
soccer please remember that
these people have made that
possible. Please take the time
to thank them. They deserve it.
More refs are needed. You
need to be 13 and up, and you
can earn some cash. Anyone
who would be interested please
contact any executive member.
The executive are pleased to
announce the nights for soccer
this year: Tuesdays will be U-
12s and U-8s. Wednesdays will
be U-10s and Kiddie Kickers.
Thursdays will be U-14s.
There are still a few spaces left
on some teams.
Soccer games start the week
of May 5 and will be finished
the end of July.
All players should hear from
their coaches the week of April
21. Here’s to another great
soccer season.
