The Saugeen Maitland Lightning PeeWee A girls hockey team took part in the 41st annual Brampton Canadettes world’s largest women’s hockey tournament on March 21 - 23. The Lightning won all six of their games, including the championship game to bring home the gold medal. The PeeWee A division consisted of 20 teams from across Ontario and the U.S. In game one, the Lightning played the St. Catharines Chaos, winning the game with a score of 1-0. The goal was scored by Vanessa Armstrong with two, Kate-Lynn Skinner, Nicole Marriage, Shelsie Popp, and Sydney Smith. Assists went to Kelly Gribbons, Becky Waring and Armstrong. The shutout went to Shelby Arsenault. In game three, the Lightning played the Etobicoke Dolphins winning their round-robin game with a score of 2-1. Goals were scored by Marriage, assisted by Carly Smith and Hanna Davidson, unassisted. With the three wins, the Saugeen Lightning finished first in their pool. Advancing to the quarter-finals, the Lightning came up against their rivals, the Sudbury Lady Wolves. The girls played one of their best games and won by a score of 3-0. Goals were scored by Hannah Davidson with two and Kelly Gribbons. Assisting were Popp with two, Marriage and Caroline McDowell. The shutout went to Sluys. In semi-final action, the Lightning played the Belleville Bearcats. The Lightning got a quick two-goal lead in the first period but was unable to hold that lead ending regulation time with a 2-2 tie. Goals were scored by Marriage, unassisted, and Davidson, assisted by Gribbons and McDowell. After five minutes of overtime, the score remained at 2-2 bringing on the inevitable shootout. Davidson took the first shot for the Lightning and scored, but so did the Bearcats. On the third shot, Marriage shot for the Lightning and scored and this time the Bearcats were unable to get by Sluys. In the championship game, the Lightning met the Clearview Icecats. Again the Lightning managed to get a 2-0 lead and with hard work and determination were able to win the game with a final score of 2-1 in regulation time fighting off a player disadvantage. Goals were scored by Popp, unassisted, who fired a bullet from the blue line on a defensive rush, and by Armstrong, assisted by Marriage. Popp was given the player of the game award receiving a medal and a warrior hockey stick. The Lightning started a best two- out-of-three series on Thursday against the Kitchener Lady Rangers, for the title of Lower Lakes Female Hockey League PeeWee A West Champions. Go team! Blyth Bantams enjoyed a solid victory in recent hockey action with an 8-1 score on home ice, March 24. The previous week they defeated this team away by a score of 10-8. (Vicky Bremner photo) The WOAA PeeWee girls year - end tournament was hosted by Blyth from Thursday, March 27 to Sunday, March 31. With 22 teams in three divisions, the arenas in Blyth and Wingham on Saturday were busy with teams vying for their respective championships. The Blyth Ice Dogs had their first game in the White Division on Friday night against a very strong Saugeen Shores team, which eventually won the White Division title. The girls held their own through three periods but lost the game by a score of 4-0. This loss put them through to the consolation side against Kincardine HL on Saturday afternoon. The girls came out strong and defeated their opponent by a score of 4-1 giving them the chance to play in the consolation final on Sunday afternoon against Goderich. The girls knew it would be a tough battle against a strong opponent but came out strong and were up 2-0 until Goderich evened the score. Blyth gained the lead again but Goderich eventually tied it up to force an overtime period. There was a lot of back and forth action with many spectators on their feet but a shot in the Blyth end had the puck flipping over the netminder to give Goderich the victory. Go girls The Blyth PeeWee girls played Saugeen Shores Friday night in the tournament in Blyth and lost 4-0. Blyth went on to win the next game Saturday, then lost the final by one point in overtime on Sunday. There were 22 teams taking part in the tournament. TEAM REGISTRATION TO FOLLOW IN MAY - WATCH FOR A DATE IN YOUR LOCAL CITIZEN Southampton’s Carly McArthur, shot a speeding bullet into the empty net seizing the second game of the Saugeen Maitland Midget AAs second round playoff series. They defeated the St. Thomas Wildcats 5-3 on Saturday after- noon. It was the second straight win, giving them the best two-out-of- three series and moving them on to the finals in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League. Friday night the girls won with a score of 5-1. Tammy Freiburger, Wingham and Ona Mezenberg, Owen Sound, led in point scoring over the weekend with four points each. Victoria Bertrand, Port Elgin and Kelsey Vanderveen, Lucknow each had three while Karisa Ross, Palmerston had two. Single points went to Dru Austin, Goderich, Kate Wagner and Eastlyn Bellamy, both from Sauble Beach. Brianne Wheeler, Brussels and Stephanie McDougall, Mitchell played well in goal, keeping the team alive during all the penalty box visits. The girls will go up against the top seven teams in Southwestern Ontario this upcoming weekend in Vaughan. Saugeen Maitland wins playoff series Lightning strikes gold Five area young men returned home on Saturday after playing in the Junior National Broomball Championships. Joel Salverda, Sean Bechtel, Roman Sturzenegger, Drew Taylor and Adam DeBoer were all part of a last-minute team put together when Newfoundland dropped out of the tournament. Taylor and DeBoer played with the Seaforth Hitmen and Salverda, Bechtel and Sturzenegger played with the Blyth Renegades. Other players were from the Mildmay Moose and the Ottawa Valley Ice Dogs. The fellows had a good time, did not win many games but played very hard in the fast moving, high calibre broomball games. The team name was the Stars and five of the team members, including Taylor took part in a skills competition where they finished second by one-quarter of a second in the relay race. For many of the team players this was their first and for some their last or only Junior Nationals. It was quite an experience for all involved. Rob Hunking put the team together and managed it. Fred DeBoer was the trainer. Locals in national tourney The Blyth Rebels travelled to Arnprior to play in the Provincial championships. They took to the ice for a morning game against the Barrie Stingers and ended with a 4- 0 victory. Later on in the day they played the Kingston Storm and won 1-0 in overtime. The next night they played Parr Line, also a Central West team, and were defeated 1-0. Bright and early on the Sunday morning the Rebels faced Polar Ice from Central West. The Rebels would suffer their second loss, 2-0 to give them the bronze. Polar Ice world go on to beat Parr Line twice to win the gold. The Rebels placed second in Central West to give them the opportunity to travel to provincials. Rebels win bronze
