The Citizen, 2008-04-03, Page 2Just in time to raise your spirits
after a long winter, an exciting
evening of art , music, fun and food
is announced.
Women’s Shelter, Second Stage
Housing and Counselling Services
of Huron County will host “Small
Treasures” on Friday, May 2 at 7:30
p.m. at the Goderich Co-op Gallery
and Elizabeth’s Fine Art, both at 54
Courthouse Square.
Original works of art in a variety
of media, and Scott Chow’s music
will be featured, with fine finger
foods, and wine rounding out the
evening.
Only 75 tickets will be sold, and
each ticket holder will be able to
take home an exciting piece of
art .
Ticket holders’ names will be
drawn throughout the evening and
they may then choose a work of art.
The tickets for the evening will be
$99 and a guest may be brought for
an additional $1 (only one piece of
art for each holder of a $99 ticket).
The best artists of the area are very
excited about being able to help with
this fundraiser. All proceeds from
this event will go to help the women
and children who have experienced
abuse in their lives. In the past year,
the emergency shelter has provided
a safe haven for 135 women and
children, responded to 3976 crises
and support telephone calls, and
housed 82 women and children in
our second stage housing units.
Tickets for Small Treasures are
available from board members, or by
calling 519-524-5333.
PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2008.By Jo-Ann McDonaldIt was a quieter week at theBrussels Legion Branch for Branchmembers but not for the use of the
hall.
A meeting, hosted by Brussels
Agri Services concerning horses,
care, feed and management with
guest speakers, was held on
Thursday night.
The Thursday night darts had 10
taking aim at the boards. The first-
place team was Marlene Little,
Roger McHardy and John
Stadelmann. Coming in second were
Gord Jacklin and Sandra Josling.
The seventh skunk of the yearhonours went to team Heather Little,Harry Smith and Sharon Robbins.High shot of the night was by Sandra
with a 120.
Friday was a nice day for the
annual Brussels Agromart customer
and info day with the added treat of
pancakes and sausage served up for
all to enjoy. Employees and some
helpers were kept busy in the
kitchen at the well attended event.
The Friday night supper of
Chinese turkey had a smaller turnout
than usual. This week will be
salisbury steak.
The Branch held its first fish fry ofthe year and had a great turnout.Nearly 150 people turned out toenjoy the dinner served up by
kitchen help Lisa Glanville, Anne
Pelletier, Sharon Robbins, Mabel
Glanville, Deb Cann and Sandra
Josling. The fryers were looked after
by crew Rick McDonald, Murray
Lowe, Andy Overholt, Lawrence
Machan, Harold Bridge, Barrie
Currie and Norm Dobson.
The Zone public speaking event
was held in Seaforth on Saturday
with representatives from Brussels
Branch attending. Jacob McGavin
and Heidi Bachert did a fine job butwill not advance to Districtcompetition. Delayna Smith tookfirst in her division so moves on.
Congrats to these people for a job
well done.
Limited tickets for fundraiser
I think I smell spring. I’ve heard
there is a robin or two in the village
and the leaf tips of the bulbs are
peeking. Ahhh.....
Thanks to Jim and Lois Lee and
their staff, the Upper Deck was a
great place to be on Friday night.
Pretty fine music filled the space as
Shawn Kellerman and his drummer
and bass player showed their great
talent to the appreciative crowd.
Now we know what a Juno-
nominated musicians sounds like,
were very impressed and hope to
hear Shawn again soon.
The Hetherington and Keil kids
had their Christmas dinner in
Listowel on Sunday. Actually we
decided that March is a fine time for
turkeys and the trimmings. The rush
of the season is past, the worst of the
winter was on hold and the date was
more manageable for some. So the
travellers from Hallville and
Bobcaygeon had a nice weekend of
family time, without snowflake
surveillance. Alma enjoyed her time
with all the offspring who kept
telling her stories old and new.
Memories are so precious.
Correspondence from Queen
Victoria this past week indicated that
the newspaper report was
incomplete. She felt that three very
important roles had been bypassed.
The Ladies of the Silver tea service
who set the tone for the party were
Mary Bryans and Alma Watson and
the Musician of the Court was Grace
Jutzi. So oops and thanks again
ladies.
The BMG Community Centre
staff are all ready now if you need
the defibrillator. Instructions were
offered last week by county
paramedics and the staff proved their
competence with hands-on testing.
Good work folks.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Sign of spring
Could it be that spring is really in the air as the Brussels
Legion cooks took to the outdoors for the first time this year
to host a fish fry on Saturday night. At the fryer were Harold
Bridge, left and Murray Lowe. (Vicky Bremner photo)
