Grand opening
It truly was a grand opening game on March 20 at the Blyth
Community Centre with Wingham’s F.E. Madill Secondary
School hanging eight goals up on the Holy Cross
Centurions from Strathroy to their one in the opening game
of the annual high school hockey tournament. The
tournament was initially scheduled to play on March 5, but
was cancelled due to weather concerns. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Brussels Tykes went into playoffs
against the first-place Seaforth
team.
The local players had their work
cut out for them. They gave a solid
game in what came out to be a 3-1
loss.
Brussels travelled to Seaforth and
ended the season with 4-0 loss.

A week ago Monday night,
Brussels Novice Reps travelled to
Shallow Lake for game two of the
best-of-five series. Brussels came
away with a 3-2 win. The team made
11 shots and goalie Derrick
Waechter made 13 saves.
Scoring for Brussels were Wyatt
Machan and Delayna Smith, assisted
by Smith and Logan Kellington.
The team travelled to Shallow
Lake last Friday for game three. The
spectators were given their money’s
worth as the play was back and forth
throughout the entire game.
In the second period, Connor
Bridge scored the first one of the
night on a breakaway. Kellington
netted the second goal from Smith,
giving Brussels a 2-0 lead heading in
to the third period.
Shallow Lake fought back to tie it
up with two quick goals.
Kellington netted his second,
assisted by Noah Terpstra and
Daniel Fritz.
Shallow Lake scored on a penalty
shot, to tie it up again at 3-3. With
just 4:22 left on the clock,
Kellington netted his hattrick of the
night to make it 4-3. This goal was
assisted by Kailey Wheeler and
Konrad McArter.
Brussels kept Shallow Lake from
scoring again to end the game with a
4-3 win.
This third win awarded Brussels
the WOAA Novice - Jacobi Division
title. Each player was presented
medallions, champ hats, and Dodge
mini-sticks.
Goalie Derrick Waechter accepted
the Jacobi trophy on behalf of his
team. Waechter also accepted the
Dodge Cup – a keeper trophy
sponsored by Dodge.
Missing from the bench were
Machan and Jamie Perrault.
The end of a season
Blyth’s Junior Tykes played Zurich at home on Saturday and came away with a victory. The

Novices WOAA champs
The Brussels Atom Reps finished
out their hockey season on Thursday
night against Flesherton.
It was back and forth all through
the first period, with no score. The
second period saw Flesherton score
two.
Brussels was able to net one when
Ben Hruska scored assisted by Tim
Waechter. The second goal was
scored by Waechter, assisted by
Hayden TenPas.
Despite their absolute best efforts,
Brussels lost to Flesherton 5-3 and
came home with the James R.
Hamilton Memorial Trophy as the
OMHA Atom E finalists.
