The Londesborough Happy Gang
Seniors played host to two
card parties last week at
the Londesborough Community
Hall.
On Thursday, March 13, they
held a card party as part of the
annual card cavalcade in support of
the Clinton Public Hospital. That
afternoon there were 15 tables of
euchre players whose admission
fee goes directly to the hospital.
Door prizes were won by:
Eleanor Falconer, an afghan donat-
ed by Marie Krauter; Jewel
Plunkett, a magazine rack made by
Doug Snell and Harry Lear, a fruit
basket put together by Mary Peel.
Milt Dale donated a wooden fruit
bowl and one of his carved pens
which were won by Ruby Pickard
and Betty Millar respectively.
A number of additional draw
prizes were also donated by mem-
bers of the Londesborough group.
The Londesborough seniors thank
everyone who came to the village
that afternoon to support this cause.
On Friday evening, March 14,
the seniors held their regular
monthly card party. There were 16
tables of euchre players at that
event. At the conclusion of card
playing, Delores Howatt and
Dorothy Dalton had the highest
score of 79. Finishing in second
place were Len and Betty
Archambault with 76 points. Close
behind with a score of 75 and win-
ning third prize were Joanne
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter.
Lloyd Glousher and Doug Hugill
took home the money for most lone
hands having successfully played
six.
The seniors group will host
another card party on April 11.
On the fifth Sunday of Lent, Palm
Sunday, March 16, Carmen, Mary
Anne and Zachary Drost led the
Lenten Tenebrae at Londesborough
United Church. They extinguished
the fifth candle and added a palm
branch to the cross. The poem read
spoke of Christ and His disciples
meeting for what would be their last
supper.
Beautiful floral arrangements dec-
orated the sanctuary, left by the fam-
ily following the funeral on
Wednesday of Dennis Penfound.
Condolences are extended by the
church community to the Penfound
family.
The senior choir sang a familiar
anthem, Open the Gates of the
Temple. The gospel reading was
Matthew 21: 1-11. Those verses
recall Christ’s triumphal entry into
Jerusalem riding on a donkey.
During the children’s time at the
front, Rev. Pat Cook spoke about
events of Palm Sunday. Then she
told the story of a stubborn donkey
whose owner decided to sell him.
Rumour has it that that was the don-
key chosen by Christ to ride into
Jerusalem. That particular breed of
donkey has dark hair on its back and
shoulders in the form of a cross since
that day.
The message to the adults by Rev.
Cook dealt with the fact that
Christians around the world have
come through the five weeks of Lent
and now, on Palm Sunday, they can
join the crowds who are lining the
streets as Jesus makes His way into
Jerusalem.
Christians are among those who
believe in the teachings of Jesus but
others were there that day out of
curiosity. Still others were spies
whose reports led to the crucifixion.
Christ’s entry showed courage for
He was aware of the events that
would happen. Moreover He was
showing everyone he really was the
Messiah by His grand entrance. Also
He was claiming the hearts of the
people, those He had come to claim
with the strength of His love. This
was a day of rejoicing.
Rev. Cook remarked that this com-
ing week Christians should remem-
ber all that Jesus has done for them
as symbolized in the sacrament of
communion.
Assisting Rev. Cook with the serv-
ing of communion were Laura Scott,
Helen Dale, Betty Archambault,
Darrel Bergsma, Carmen Drost and
Steven Duizer.
The senior choir will gather for
practice on Easter Sunday, March
23, at 10 a.m.
Any parents wishing to present
their child for baptism on May 11,
Mother’s Day, should contact the
church office by April 6.
The Londesborough UCW will
hold a spring cleanup day at the
church on March 26 beginning at
9:30 a.m.
More than 50 people of all ages
enjoyed the crokinole party held by
the Sunday school on March 13.
This number included some March
break visitors. By all reports there
was lots of fun and lots of noise.
There were 12 tables of committed
players. Four players won nine of the
10 games played. Snacks followed
the game time.
A special guest
While green beer takes centre stage in the older years, there is no better way to spend a St.
Patrick’s Day in the younger years than with a big, green ogre. Shrek stopped by to visit the
children spending Monday in the Early Years program at the Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church. Yvonne Wilts warmed up the crowd, singing songs with the children so
that Shrek would know where to find them. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
