The Citizen, 2008-03-20, Page 17The North Huron Family HealthTeam has to announced that it ispartnering with Life Labs (formerlyMDS) to open up a new blood andspecimen collection centre in theWingham and District Health Centre. The new service, which opens on
Monday, March 24, will be located in
the medical centre down the hall fromthe current physician offices just pastthe waiting room. The Life Labscentre will be open Monday – Fridayfrom 7 a.m. to noon each day. The new centre will handleoutpatient blood tests and other
regular diagnostic tests. Starting on
Monday, patients requiring a bloodtest will need to go to the Life Labscentre, unless directed otherwise bytheir physician. Life Labs will pickup the specimens each day, analyzethem overnight in their lab in Londonand then electronically send the
results to the physicians the next
morning. “By opening at 7 a.m., the new LifeLabs service hopes to improve patientservice access”, said Jim Whaley, administrator of the new FamilyHealth Team. “We are pleased to offerthis new service to the community in
partnership with Life Labs”.
Last year, Wingham and
surrounding communities were
approved for a Family Health Team.
This new model of primary care isparticularly attractive to ruralcommunities because it provides newfunding to hire additional health careprofessionals in communities that aremedically under-serviced. In addition to the new Life Labs
service, the North Huron Family
Health Team is currently recruiting
for two nurse practitioners and a
social worker.

is 22 years.
There are over 190 non-
indigenous species of fish and sea
creatures that live in the Great
Lakes. While some of this sea life
has resided in our waters since the
early 1900s, most has appeared in
the last 25 years. A new species
appears in the lakes every six
months.
More than two-thirds of Great
Lakes fish species spawn in
wetlands, and many rely on near
shore vegetation for food and
shelter. Wide-spread alteration and
destruction of these habitats –
including 75 per cent of Great Lakes
shoreline and two-thirds of the
region’s wetlands – harm native
fish.
World Water Day is a good day to
pause and reflect on how
magnificent the Great Lakes really
are, and that we have a moral
obligation to protect them. It’s a
good day to pledge to become
engaged in efforts to ensure that we
pass on a legacy of clean Great
Lakes water to our children.

and after a hard-fought game, the
final score was against Brussels
4-3.
The Brussels team had the bye for
the first round, then suffering the
two losses were done for the
tournament.
Congratulations to the PeeWees,
coaches and parents on a great
year.
The St. Patrick’s wings, meat
draws and karaoke had a good
turnout. The early crowd enjoyed
their supper of wings and fries as
well as several meat draws.
It was a pleasure to have the
parents and some of the PeeWee
hockey team players arrive to enjoy
the evening after playing in the
Young Canada Tournament. They
too enjoyed wings and more meat
draws and also took the opportunity
to celebrate Ken Higgins birthday.
Nobody seemed to be in the
singing mood, probably because of
all the cheering they did at the
hockey games, but everyone seemed
to have a good time anyway.
Thanks to Comrade Greg Wilson
who was the chief cook for the
evening and Jo-Ann McDonald who
organized the meat draws. A special
mention to Kendra Cardiff with her
smiling face, who came bearing gifts
for the Branch, myself and
shamrocks for the crowd.
It was Zone Convention on
Sunday. Attending from the Branch
were president Jo-Ann McDonald
and second vice-president Deb
Cann. They travelled to Wingham
for the afternoon.
Comrade John Lowe was also in
attendance as Zone youth chairman
and Comrade Eric Ross as Tri-
District hospital treasurer.
Our Branch expresses
condolences to bartender Shirley
Hopper and her family on the
passing of her father Rollie Marks.
Sympathy is also extended to all of
the extended family and friends.
Happy Easter to everyone and a
reminder that the Branch will be
closed on Good Friday and Easter
Monday.
