The Citizen, 2008-03-20, Page 11A problem most churches would
love to have, too big a following, has
resulted in the opening of the
Brussels Community Bible Chapel,
hosting a morning and evening
service every Sunday.
After Gorrie Bible Fellowship
started to see its building packed to
capacity every Sunday, eight
families decided to part ways and
begin their own worship service in
Brussels. The desire to leave, says
Steve Klumpenhower, was of
craving a smaller worshipping
environment, and had nothing to do
with ill will towards the church.
While the Gorrie Bible Fellowship
was sad to see a piece of its
congregation go, Klumpenhower
says, there is still a very open
relationship between the two
churches.
In fact, he says, many of the youth
members of the Brussels Chapel still
attend the mid-week Bible club in
Gorrie, and they often host speakers
from the Gorrie Fellowship in
Brussels.
There are several programs put in
place for young people. The sermon
is presented in a very contemporary
manner, with old favourites as well
as some new music to keep members
of all ages intrigued.
There are also Sunday school
classes and a nursery during the
service.
Right now, the Brussels
Community Bible Chapel is holding
services at the Brussels Public
School at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
every Sunday in the school’s
gymnasium. Sunday school classes
are currently being taught in the
library, and the nursery is thekindergarten room.Klumpenhower says that while, ideally, they would like to have theirown building one day, the schoolprovides a great space for what they
do, and they have no immediate
plans to move.
Each service starts with an
opening prayer, continues on withworship songs, a children’s story, after which the children go toSunday school, then the sermon isdelivered by whoever wishes tospeak that day.
The congregation, while starting
with only 25 people, has grown to
over 35. Klumpenhower says,
however, that they had nearly 70 outto a music day they hosted severalweeks ago. He hopes to see a similarturnout for the church’s Easterdrama, Two Faces in the Shadows. The play will take place Sunday,
March 23 at 10:30 a.m.
Many members of the church
spent last Friday night visiting
homes in Brussels, introducingthemselves, and inviting people tothe Easter drama. All are welcome to the service, there is Sunday school for childrenaged four to 11 and childcare
provided for children under four.
Light refreshments will also be
available.

Congregation begins meeting in Brussels
Community
Steve Klumpenhower of the
Brussels Community Bible
Chapel led last Sunday’s
service, but says the church is
led by any member of the
congregation on any given
Sunday and that it doesn’t
necessarily have a pastor.
While they have been meeting
since October, just last week
members canvassed the
village to introduce themselves
to the community and extend
an invitation to their Easter
drama, entitled Two Faces in
the Shadows that will take
place at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday,
March 23. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
