Welcome back to the McDonalds.
Can you imagine, we were actually
away for holidays.
Rick and I, along with our daughter
LeeAnn and husband Jason Konarski
drove to North Carolina to visit with
Rick’s sister Karin and husband
Charlie Calhoun. We took off last
Saturday and missed the snowstorm
in Ontario but we sure found it in
Ohio. It was a pretty nasty drive but
Rick and Jason did a fine job.
We were headed to Roaring Gap,
North Carolina, which is just across
the North Carolina border. Nestled
high in the mountains at 3,500 feet
above sea level, Roaring Gap and the
community of Olde Beau, is a golf
and country club with an 18 hole
course and roads and trees winding
throughout. Homes are built
throughout the compound and on
reading the rules of the golf course
state that when a ball lands in a
property owner’s yard move the ball
back to the course and resume play
with no penalty.
The ‘Roaring’ part of the
community name refers to the winds,
the roaring winds that blow through
the area.
There was no snow and the
temperatures were around the high
40°F.
Arriving after the 15-hour drive,
we enjoyed having a home-cooked
meal and wonderful conversations
with Karin and Charlie.
On Sunday, we took a tour of the
Blue Ridge Parkway, a beautiful
scenic drive through the mountains,
with plenty of overlook areas to stop
and view the scenery. We saw Stone
Mountain – formed 350 million years
ago and the Brinegar Cabin – where
Linsey-Woolsey material was
invented.
From the mountain, you could see
the many acres of Christmas tree
farms in various stages of growth, a
leading industry in North Carolina.
The next day, we were off to
Lowe’s Motor Speedway in
Charlotte. We had a tour of the
facility which was fantastic, then
went to see some of the other famous
race team businesses.
We returned to Karin’s for another
great home-cooked meal, then
swimming and hot tubbing ended the
day.
Our last day was spent again
touring the immediate area, the town
of Sparta with its many quaint little
shops and enjoying dinner out with
Karin and Charlie.
The restaurant, thank goodness,
had only a few customers because we
were a noisy bunch having a great
time together. When we said good
night, we said goodbye, because at 4
a.m. we were on the road and heading
north for home. There was no
problem with our drive home, clear
roads and sunny skies and 14 hours
later, 6 p.m., we were home.
We had a really great time but just
too short.
George Langlois is in Stratford
hospital, Anna Cunningham in
Wingham hospital and Jean
Davidson and Leona Snyder in
Seaforth hospital. Home from the
hospital are Mary Huether and Joe
Semple.
Congratulations to Chad and
Crystal McCallum on the birth of a
baby girl. Kaleigh Dawn has arrived
to thrill first-time grandparents
Calvin and Gail Semple and third-
time grandparents Ron and Betty
McCallum
Congratulations to Greg Ryan and
Trudy Upshall who were married last
week in Las Vegas. The happy
couple, along with two other couples
who tagged along to be witnesses
spent the week celebrating the
nuptials.
Congratulations to Jeff and Sarah
Grobbink on the birth of another son.
Parker William joined the family last
Thursday, another playmate for Lily
and Jack. Happy grandparents are
Henry and Marianna Grobbink to
have another little one to adore.
Returning from a two week stay at
South Padre Island are John and
Karen Braecker, Holly and Allison.
South Padre Island is just off the
Texas coast and they were there to
visit with Bruno and Joyce Braecker.
Joining them for week were Adam
Braecker and Ed McClure who flew
down.
The family drove down in the
motor home and didn’t rush the drive.
They had good weather, not really
hot, but nice. The kids thought it was
warm enough to be swimming but the
adults thought differently. Temps
were in the high 60°F, but the
weather was very windy.
One day they drove into
Brownsville and walked over the
bridge to Mexico. They had dinner
out in a great restaurant where they
celebrated Allison’s 10th birthday,
with cake and song.
They made a few stops on the way
home. At Branson, Missouri they
stopped and took in some shows and
making a stop in Nashville, has
turned Allison into an Elvis fan. They
also swung by the Alamo area as
well.
It was great to get away, but great
to get home reports Karen.
A trip to Ottawa was in store for
the Sniper intermediate broomball
team from Seaforth, including
players Matt Shortreed and Adam
McClure, of Walton for the
provincial playoffs. Unfortunately,
they didn’t have very good luck and
suffered defeat in both of their games
to be eliminated on Friday evening.
Cheering them on from Walton
were Julie Shortreed and Fred, Heidi
and Jen McClure.
Get-well wishes to Howard
Hackwell who has been under the
weather this past week. We wish him
a speedy recovery.
Marie Coutts is now a resident of
the Seaforth Manor and looks
forward to have her many Walton
friends dropping by for a visit.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week are Cassandra Banks, Ray
Huether Jr. Celeste Ryan, Cora
Alcock, Art McNaughton, Carol
Henderson and Keith Wilbee.
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee A
girls hockey team completed their
semi-final league playoffs with
Cambridge this weekend.
In the best two-out-of-three series,
the Lightning won the home game
on Tuesday evening with a score of
1-0.
The lone goal was scored by
Nicole Marriage with 17.4 seconds
remaining in the game. Assists went
to Hannah Davidson and Sydney
Smith.
The second game was played in
Cambridge on Friday evening. The
Lightning took that game as well by
a score of 3-0.
Goals were scored by Vanessa
Armstrong, two and Becky Waring.
Assists went to Marriage, Becky
Bults, Kate-Lynn Skinner and Kelly
Gribbons.
Both shutouts were earned by
Stephanie Sluys.
The team will take part in the
Brampton Canadettes tournament on
Easter weekend.
Polar Ice, which plays out of
Seaforth, won gold at the provincial
broomball championships this past
weekend.
Players come from Seaforth,
Dublin, Mitchell, Lucan, Denfield
and Blyth.
Chas Bos, Sandy Bos and Jenna
Taylor play on this team and they
picked up Brittney Bos for the
tournament. Sandy and Jenna won
All Star team awards for the
tournament, Sandy for forward and
Jenna for defence.
Only one goal was scored against
them for the whole tournament and
they played seven games in total.
They defeated Parr Line, another
Seaforth-based team twice to win
the title. The Rebels who are based
out of Blyth came in third.
Amanda Anderson won All Star
team award for a forward player.
All the teams qualified from
Central West Regionals with Polar
Ice finishing first, Rebels second and
Parr Line third.
