Most parents and caregivers
use car seats but in Huron
County, 75 per cent of car
seats are not used properly.
Using child restraints the
wrong way puts children in
danger.
The Huron County Health
Unit wants to change that and
is inviting community
members to learn more at an
in-depth two day workshop.
The workshop, on May 26
and 27 is at the Huron County
Health Unit in Clinton. The
training will educate
participants on the proper use
and installation of child car
seats. It will also teach the
skills needed to inspect and
install car seats as a volunteer
at car seat clinics held
regularly in Huron County.
This course is designed
especially for child care
providers, parents, retailers,
police, grandparents and
anyone who values the
importance of child safety in
vehicles.
The workshop will be
facilitated by Valerie Lee from
the Infant and Toddler Safety
Association. Participants will
receive hands-on training with
a variety of child restraint
systems, car seat components
and vehicle seat belts.
The registration fee is $50
and space is limited to 20
participants. If you would like
to attend the workshop, call
Josée Cayer at Huron County
Health Unit at 519-482-3416
or toll free 1-877-837-6143.
Bob Dent is a community
volunteer in the car seat safety
program. He took the car seat
training in 2002 and has
volunteered his time at car
seat clinics in Exeter,
Goderich and Clinton. He
checks car seats for proper
installation and gives advice
about the next car restraint to
use.
He says, “It’s our
responsibility to care for those
who need our protection. How
can we not do our utmost to
keep them safe?”
Car seat safety volunteer
Veronica Farquhar from
Exeter says, “I believe all
parents want what is best for
their children. It’s crucial to
educate anyone caring for
infants and children in this
busy on-the-road society we
live in. I can’t think of
anything sadder than losing a
child because we, as
educators and parents, didn't
take the time to be informed.”
If you would like to check
the installation of car seats in
your vehicle, you can attend a
car seat clinic at the Fire Hall
in Clinton on March 18, May
20 or June 17. Appointments
are required or you may
attend at Eric Campbell Ford
Lincoln in Exeter on
Saturday, April 26 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments
are not necessary.
The Blyth Atom Rep team
was eliminated by Embro
from the OMHA playoffs,
but then it was on to
group play with Wallace
and Drayton in home-
and-away round robin hockey
aciton.
Since Drayton and Blyth
are in the D division, the
WOAA championship was to
be played within the group
playoffs.
If either team won both
round robin games, that team
would also win the WOAA
championship. If the games
were split, a third would be
scheduled to decide the
winner.
Blyth opened group play
against Drayton with a short
staffed team and lost the game
7-1.
The team then played
Wallace and won both games
by scores of 4-1 and 6-0.
Then it was the final
group play game
with Drayton and plenty
on the line for Blyth.
First they had to win the
game to force an additional
game for the WOAA
championship and second,
score enough goals to
advance to the next round of
group play.
The team played a solid
game and won 3-0 in
Drayton.
However the deficit from
the first game was too much
to overcome and the team was
unable to advance in group
play.
The third and deciding
game with Drayton will be
played in Drayton and will
probably take place after the
March break.

The Blyth Senior Tykestravelled to participate in the
Harriston tournament on
Sunday, March 9.
The team played very well,
leading to two wins and one
loss.
The first game was played
against Listowel I. Scoring
began early in the period
when Damon Allen slipped
one in past the goalie. Drew
Van Wyk took advantage of
the opportunity to score the
next goal when he had a
breakaway.
Bailey Bos assisted Carson
Richmond to bring the team
to a 3 - 1 lead.
Parker Gibbings celebrated
with his teammates afterscoring the fourth goal.
Carson Richmond helped
Bailey Bos to score the next
goal.
The final goal was passed
from Parker Gibbings, then
tapped into the net by Collin
Howson, for a final score of 6
- 1.
The team played a very
strong second game against
the Listowel team II.
Goalscorers were Van Wyk
with two goals, Allen and
Gibbings, each with one goal.
Assists were made by
Ethan Coultes, Mitch
McNichol, Michaela Rodger
and Bos.
Jake Gulutzen was solid ingoal.
The third game was a nail
bitter. The team played their
best against their main rivals,
the Seaforth Stars.
The Stars started the
scoring but this was followd
shortly after by a goal from
Van Wyk.
Seaforth took a 3-1 lead,
but it wasn't long before Allen
and Jared Shearer scored to
tie it up.
The Stars ended up scoring
one last goal for the win, but
Blyth kept them on their toes
right up to the last second.
Once again, Gulutzen
played very well in net.
Moving on up
This Brussels player was moving on up the ice last Saturday as Blyth
travelled to Brussels for some Pre-Tyke action. Everyone was fortunate
enough to get in and get out before the weather got too nasty in the
afternoon. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
