March is Epilepsy Awareness
Month.
This year, 90 people within
Huron, Perth and Bruce Counties
will be diagnosed with epilepsy.
One out of 10 people will have a
seizure at some point in his or her
life. After migraine headaches,
epilepsy is the most common
neurological disorder.
Christina May was five years old
when she experienced her first
seizures. Throughout her school
days, most teachers did not
understand what epilepsy was and
would yell at her to pay attention.
She remembers coming out of a
seizure and finding fellow students
staring down at her, some
concerned, some laughing, some
making fun.
She also experienced “auras”,
small seizures that didn’t cause her
to lose consciousness; they were
often a warning sign that a bigger
seizure was coming.
When she had an aura, she learned
to run to the bathroom, because she
didn’t want anyone to see her
seizure.
Unfortunately, sometimes she
would fall and hit the toilet or sink,
ending up with black eyes, broken
teeth and even broken limbs.
But, she said it was better than
waking up to the teasing and
intolerance.
Today, Christina May continues to
have uncontrolled seizures. She
lives in the country and cannot drive
because of her seizures. T
he staff at Epilepsy Huron Perth
Bruce has been instrumental in
helping her to live a mostly normal
life, she said.
