Christians in over 170 countries and 2,000 communities across Canada alone will be gathering to pray and act in solidarity with the people of Guyana on Friday. Locally there will be services in Brussels, Blyth, Londesborough and Belgrave scheduled throughout the day. The service in Brussels will take place at Brussels United Church at 7:30 p.m., the service in Blyth will be at the Church of God at 7:30 p.m., the service in Londesborough will be at Londesborough United at 1:30 p.m. and Knox United will host a 2 p.m. service in Belgrave. Growing concerns in Guyana include poverty and the spread of HIV/AIDS. In addition to the spread of HIV/AIDS, there has been a strong correlation between the disease and violence against women. While government and churches are working to improve living situations, domestic violence still sits at an alarming level and trafficking in persons has also been said to be connected. The World Day of Prayer is rooted in an ecumenical day of prayer first organized by women across Canada and the United States in 1920. The first World Day of Prayer was officially held in 1922. The Grade 12 construction class at St. Anne’s school in Clinton recently completed a large course project with the help of the local business community. The class, taught by Mr. Overholt, built a storage shed for Sacred Heart Elementary School in Wingham. The project called on the skills of the entire class as they designed the structure and took weeks to frame, roof and apply siding to the building. Having built the shed, the class was still required to engage their problem solving techniques to follow through with the delivery of the project. The local business community graciously donated their time and effort to allow the group to complete the project. Canada Crane, located in Wingham, donated the use of the crane and an operator to load and unload the crane on its final resting spot on the Sacred Heart campus. Van Driel Excavating Inc. based out of Clinton, was instrumental in the success of the shed project, as Simon Van Driel and his crew Brian Wammes and Derrick Van Driel for arranging and donating transportation costs from Clinton to Wingham. The new shed is now operational and being used for storage. The project allowed the class of St. Anne’s students to gain valuable hands on experience and see first hand how the community can co- operate to ensure the success of a difficult task.
