HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-03-06, Page 11Welcome to March.Whether you believe in
Wiarton Willie’s prediction,
superstitions or old wives’
tales about the weather, it
might be hard to predict
what’s going to happen this
month.
A saying that I hadn’t heard
before is “What the weather is
like on the last Friday of
February will be the weather
for the next month”.
The weather gods are going
to have a tough time deciding
what weather to give us.
Friday, Feb. 29 was a day of
every kind of weather. The day
started out cold, very cold.
Then the temperature started
to rise and the snow started to
fall. Lots of snow. Then the
rain. Freezing rain, the more
snow.
March 1 dawned not as cold
but a very cold brisk wind,
blew up the snow, squally
sometimes, and roads were icy
and slippery, then the sun
shone after lunch and it was a
beautiful day.
So do we believe the last
Friday myth – cold, snowy,
freezing rain or the familiar
March myth – in like a lion,
out like a lamb, cold, windy,
snowy and sunny? Take your
pick, but it sounds like a mixed
bag of weather for March.
Enjoying a lot better
weather were John, Lisa,
Kennedy and Kaden Huether
while away on a trip to
Florida. They were near
Orlando visiting with Margery
Huether. They were away a
week and of course a trip to
Disney World would be in
order. The children really
enjoyed the Magic Kingdom
and the Animal Kingdom.
They had nice weather with
a couple days of rain. The kids
enjoyed swimming and having
a good time visiting with
Grandma.
Hot, hot, hot! That’s what
the weather was like in El
Salvador. Taking a vacation
there were Clyde and Cathy
McClure, Ken and Marina
Scott and Valerie Shortreed.
The group stayed at the
Royal Del Cameron Salinas
resort (the second time for
some because it is great).
The complex they found had
expanded and is huge. There
are five pools, five restaurants
and plenty to do.
There was a saltwater pool
that filled and emptied with
the tide.
Some of the group went on
the coffee plantation tour and
found it incredible. They all
went for a tour of another
beach where the sand was very
dark and the waves were huge.
They didn’t swim in it because
of the dangerous undertow.
The group met folks from
Paisley, Listowel and the
Gorrie area and spent time
with all of them. The beach
was beautiful so they spent a
lot of time just walking and
enjoying the beautiful weather.
It was a wonderful week away.
Congratulations to Raube
and Bonnie Beuerman on the
birth of a son. Arick arrived
last week and is a baby brother
for Britney, Courtney and
Kyle. Arick is anothergrandchild for Bill and DianneBeuerman. Our condolences areextended to Ethel Brewer andthe Huether, Hastings andLowe families on the loss of ahusband and uncle, JoeBrewer. I have known Joe forabout 25 years and anytime Iwas at their home or he was
waiting for Ethel at mine, he
was a great guy to talk with.
We always had a lot of laughs.
Joe and Ethel lived in
Morris Twp. after they were
married, then moved into
Brussels. Joe operated a coal
and oil business for Champion
Fuels for many years.
Following his years with the
oil truck, he went to work
driving for Maitland Reddi-
Mix as well as some other
companies. Our deepest
sympathies are extended to all
the family members.
I felt sorry for the poor
construction guys that were
busy putting the
communications tower up at
the Walton ball park last week.
It was a mere -14°C as the
three guys were busy securing
the sections of the tower as the
crane lifted them up. Friday
was a little better, not quite as
cold, for the final section and
then they were gone. It won’t
be long and Walton will have
high speed.
Doreen Hackwell was in
Stratford hospital last week
and has been released
following her knee surgery.
She’s coming along and we
hope she recovers quickly.
Our condolences are
expressed to the family of
Nelson Ryan who passed
away on Sunday. Nelson had
suffered a fall and had broken
his hip, then suffered
complications. Nelson was a
regular customer of the Walton
Inn and your chance of
meeting up with him was a
given.
He was born and raised in
McKillop Twp. and carried on
his successful farming life for
many years. His latest
business venture has been
running his trucking company
fleet. He was a great supporter
of many groups, buying tickets
and. being a lucky kind of guy,
quite often was a winner.
Nelson will be missed
around the Walton area and
our sympathies are extended
to his family including
brothers Gerry, Jim and Jackof Walton area.Returning from a great tripto Mexico are cousins Tinaand Trisha McClure, KellyAnn Dalton and AshleyHoggins. Ashley is actuallyfrom Calgary but going touniversity in London and is acousin on the McWhirter sideof the family.
The week-long trip was to
the Mayan Riviera in Mexico
and they had great weather.
One of the excursions was a
walking trip to the ruins (about
2 kms.), then up the ruins
(that’s way up) and back
again. They were well warned
not to touch a particular tree
on the way because it excretes
an acid from its bark and
touching it would mean having
a burning hand for about 15
days. The girls heeded the
warning and had no
misadventure that way.
They did a lot of exploring
and had a wonderful time.
Coming home wasn’t quite
so wonderful because they
were not able to land at
Kitchener airport (after
circling an hour) and were
directed to Hamilton, but were
not able to land there either. So
it was on to Ottawa. They were
put up in a hotel for the night,
had a chance to look around
that evening, then flew home
the next day to Kitchener. It
added an extra day to their
vacation but the girls enjoyed
it as well.
Welcome home to Dave and
Karen Hastings who have
returned from a month’s
holiday in Florida. They had
various members of their
family join them throughout
the month, but it’s always nice
to be home.
Our hopes for a speedy
recovery go out to Pat Keffer
who is in Wingham hospital.
Speedy recovery wishes go
out to Mary Huether who is a
patient in Strathroy hospital.
Hopefully she will be home
soon.
