Bad weather postponed the final
Bantam boys tournament game held
in Mildmay Jan. 18. This
tournament had teams entered from
Innisfil, Seaforth, Palmerston,
Mildmay and Blyth.
Mildmay and the Blyth Kings met
for the final gold medal match on
Sunday, Feb. 24 in Mildmay. The
game was very-evenly matched and
each team was eager to win the gold.
The previous weekend saw these
teams play in the provincial
tournament near Barrie. At the
provincials Mildmay walked away
with a bronze medal and Blyth was
put out of the tournament with two
overtime losses.
Twelve of the team’s 15 players
came to the game, keen to win the
gold medal.
The first period didn’t see a goal
scored by either team. Blyth showed
some great ball control and took
some great shots on net, but
Mildmay’s goalie and defence kept
shutting the Kings down. The King’s
Murray Dale made several awesome
saves as goalkeeper to keep his team
in the game.
Mildmay kept on the pressure and
even shot the ball at the Blyth net, as
the buzzer signalled the end of the
first period.
Halfway through the second
period, winger Tyler Guetter shot the
ball up the ice towards the Mildmay
net. Assistant captain Greg
Roetcisoender picked up the ball and
ran down the ice with the ball and
scored on a breakaway. Blyth
received a penalty for interference
with just over two minutes left on
the clock.
Blyth played a very defensive two
minutes and managed to kill
Mildmay’s powerplay and prevent
them from scoring.
In the last minute of the game
Mildmay pulled their goalie to try
and tie it up. Blyth players
scrambled in front of their net to
stop the Mildmay team from
scoring. The final horn rang and the
Blyth Kings won 1-0.
Blyth’s team took home the
Bantam banner and a trophy donated
by Energizer Canada. The Bantams
winning banner hangs proudly in the
Blyth arena.
Each member of the Blyth team
received individual gold medals for
their excellent effort put forth to win
this exciting match of broomball.
All players of the Blyth Kings
participated in this tournament.
The Blyth Atom girls failed to
qualify for further play after their
three round robin games.
The team opened with a 1-1 tie
with Stratford.
The team then visited Milverton
and would also have a close game.
Milverton opening the scoring in the
first period. Amy Boyce scored a
pair of goals in the second for Blyth.
Assists went to Sydney Wightman
Michie and Leanne Plunkett. Blyth
took the 2 - 1 lead into the third
period.
Milverton applied the pressure and
got two goals a minute apart in the
final period, then hung on for the
victory.
The final game was against a very
good Seaforth team that would go on
to win the division. Blyth held the
visitors to a 3-0 advantage after two
periods. Blyth would surrender
three more goals late and lost by a 6-
0 margin.
The team finished up its 16-game
regular season in the WOAA with a
game in Blyth against Kincardine on
Saturday March 1.
Ashley Higgins opened the
scoring in the first period unassisted.
The second period opened with
a nice passing play from Plunkett
to Wightman, then to Teresa
Atkinson who scored off her own
rebound.
Plunkett skated down the side on a
partial break just 29 seconds later
and fire a powerful shot that the
goalie got her stick on, but still
deflected into the top of the net.
Higgins extended the home lead to
four with another goal, this time on a
nice pass from Brooke Middegaal
from behind the net.
Middegaal added an unassisted
goal of her own in the third period to
round out the scoring for a 5 - 0
victory.
Boyce earned the shutout in relief
of Lindsay Shiell, who tried her
hand at playing centre for this game.
The team finished the season with
nine wins and seven losses and now
waits to play in the WOAA
tournament on March 15, 16 and 17
in Ayton.
The Brussels Novice Reps played
in Harriston on Friday night and
came out on top.
Goals were scored by Logan
Kellington with a hattrick, Delayna
Smith, Wyatt Machan, Connor
Bridge, and Kailey Wheeler each
with one. Assists went to Machan,
Noah Terpstra, Konrad McArter, and
Daniel Fritz. Brussels had solid
defence by Bennett Newell, Dean
Scarrow, Jamie Perrault, Dylan
McNeil and Cody Harding.
Enjoying his team’s second
shutout of the season was goalie
Derrick Waechter with 17 saves.
Their second game of the best-of-
five series was on Sunday, again in
Harriston. This time, Minto was
quick to light up the board, netting
the first of the game.
Brussels was able to net one near
the end of the third, but it was not
enough to win. Minto got this one by
a score of 2-1.
Scoring the lone goal for Brussels
was Smith, assisted by Newell.
Waechter made nine saves and
again the defence was solid.
This WOAA semi-final series is
tied at a game each with game
number three last night
(Wednesdays) and game number
four Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in
Brussels.

Manager of Saugeen Maitland
Midget AA Lightning
On Friday, Feb. 29, Saugeen
Maitland Girls Hockey Association
celebrated 10 years of league play at
the Howick Community Centre.
An alumni squad of Maitland
players was assembled and took to
the ice against the The Bull (FM
94.5) Tryhards. The game featured
some great displays of hockey talent
and also some strange antics that
The Bull are famous for.
The ex-Maitlands eventually came
out on top with an 8-6 victory.
Bantam AA Laura Irwin of Ripley
won a Team Canada jersey signed by
Hailey Wickenheiser during the
target shoot competition. Midget AA
centre Eastland Bellamy of Sauble
Beach won the shootout competition
with Midget AA goaltender Brianne
Wheeler earning the top goaltender
award during the shootout. Ex-
Maitlands, current Maitlands and
their families gathered together after
the game for further celebrations and
"”catching up” upstairs.
In total, the event raised $2,392
that will be donated and split
between two deserving charities,
Breast Cancer Research and the
WOAA Building Fund.
Atom girls end round robin
With the Blyth Bantams’ backs
against the wall in their quarter-final
series with Howick, the Bulldogs
were home for game three on
Monday, Feb. 25.
With the Bulldogs down two
games they needed to win to extend
their season and series to a fourth
game. They did, and out-played
Howick from the opening faceoff to
shut them down 3-0 and get back in
the series.
Scoring for Blyth were Adam
Cronin, Tyler Stevenson and Tyler
Black. Assists went to Cronin, Kirby
Cook, Stevenson and Dana Teed.
Blyth goaltender, Kennan
McDonald, played outstanding
when called upon and helped this
team to their first shutout game of
the year.
The team were put out of
contention, unfortunately, with a
loss on Sunday.

The Blyth Bantams kept it alive after a 3-0 whitewash of
Howick in hockey action last week. Unfortunately the

The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee A
girls hockey team finished their
provincial playdowns with Stratford
this weekend.
In the best two-out-of-three series,
the girls headed to Stratford on
Saturday with a one-game lead. The
team did not play their best but
managed to tie Stratford 2-2.
Goals were scored by Kelly
Gribbons and Miranda Lantz with
assists going to Vanessa Armstrong
and Tailor Campbell.
This tie forced the team to travel
to Stratford again on Sunday. The
girls picked their game up but still
had a hard time scoring. With 1:14
remaining in the game, Hannah
Davidson had a breakaway and put a
beautiful backhander into the net.
The girls held this one goal lead and
took the game 1-0.
The team will now take part in the
provincial championships in April.
