HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-03-06, Page 2By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe general meeting of theBrussels Legion was held onTuesday evening with 10 Comradespresent.Reports on renewals were heard
by the membership chairman Greg
Wilson. There are 145 members paid
with only eight members still to
confirm their intentions. The Branch
is in need of some new younger
members and we encourage anyone
who has any questions and/or
interest in joining the Branch to
contact Comrade Greg or the
Branch.
Maybe you’re already a member
and now have children of age that
would like to join. Or maybe you
have friends that would like to join.
Eligibility requirements have opened
up in the past years.
Besides the important issue of
supporting our remaining veterans
and being there to support our
present day troops on their return,
the Legion strives to help their
community. The Legion is proud to
support school children in the areas
of literacy and art with the
Remembrance Day poem, essay and
poster competition.
They promote important life
experience learned from public
speaking and in the past few years,
supported winning speakers who
have advanced to higher levels of
competition.
The Legion sponsors proficiency
awards, track and field awards and
has provided busing for students for
skating or swimming.
Donations have been provided for
figure skating, minor baseball for
equipment, minor hockey for jerseys
as well as entry fees for the PeeWee
team for Young Canada and the
Legion tournament.
The Legion also sponsors the
Brussels Cadet Corps supplying
awards, a meeting place, office spaceand funds. The Legion has made donationsfor the betterment and support of thecommunity through the Santa Clausparade, the Brussels Business
Association, the Brussels
Conservation area and park
restoration project, Brussels
Homecoming Levee and 135th
celebrations.
These are just some of the groups
and projects that the Brussels Legion
has supported and hopefully will
continue to support, if we can build
on our membership of the Royal
Canadian Legion in Brussels.
The poppy chairman Allyson
Cardiff submitted her report on last
year’s poppy campaign. Donations
received totalled $2,151 from the
poppy canvass, down slightly from
last year.
Donations approved were given to
the hospitals in Seaforth, Listowel,
Wingham and Clinton as well as a
donation to the CT scanner for
Goderich Hospital.
The sports chairman Comrade
Rick McDonald submitted a report
on the success of the dart teams that
played at District play and have
advanced to Provincial play in
March in North Bay. Representing
Branch 218 will be Ken Bird, Bob
Richardson, Ron Schmidt and Norm
Wylie for team play, Ron and Eric
Ross for doubles play and Norm for
singles.
The Branch passed a motion to
assist the players with a monetary
donation towards their expenses and
to pay their entry. Congratulations
and good luck to these men.
The youth report included a
reminder that Branch public
speaking will be held on Wednesday,
March 19 with speeches beginning
at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. and
everyone is welcome.
The canteen committee reportsthat a part-time bartender will berequired before the end of April andthe position will be advertised soon. The Thursday night darts had agreat turnout with 14 players taking
aim at the boards. The first-place
team was Sharon Robbins and John
Stadelmann. Finishing second are
Harry Smith and Sandra Josling. The
high shots of the night were by John
Harrison with a 140 and Heather
Little with a 126. There is still room
for more darters and everyone iswelcome. The Friday night supper of roastpork was enjoyed by a good crowd, down a bit in numbers because of theheavy snow that came right at supper
time.
This week will see sweet and sour
meatballs and rice on the menu.
Remember to save your pop tabs
for the Branch and your pop cans
and returnable bottles for the Cadet
Corps.
PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 6, 2008.
The United Church folks got their
annual meeting accomplished on
Sunday, one of the many delayed
meetings from February weather.
When a year is reviewed we
highlight the specific joys of that
year.
One of the joys mentioned, was
the return, from many months of
repair, of our memorial window.
Community names that served in the
war are part of that window and are
an important part of our worship
space. The repair job was quite
extensive but the results are
exquisite.
The names now stand out and the
poppy seems to be growing right out
of the window. It’s beautiful.
A rededication of the window will
be scheduled to share this beauty,
the craftsmanship and the
significance of this piece of
community history.
Annual meetings are good in that
you need to take a look at what
happened in the past and prepare for
the future.
Talking to several people who
took to the roads lately, each one
came home with the same great
story. The streets of Brussels and the
roads in Huron County are the
winners for clean and efficient
clearing. Several towns were
mentioned as well as the entrance
areas to Huron.
All the travellers had the same
comments – what good, clean, clear
streets and roads we have, all thanks
to the employees of Huron East and
Huron County, and of course the
folks who find and organize the
money. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you.
March is shaping up to be quite a
month – March break, Tea with the
Queen, St. Patrick’s Day, Holy
Week and Easter. Better get life
organized now.
Oh yes, the tea with the Queen bit
is not a national occasion but it may
soon be. Check the ad and mark
your calendar.
Hello to Jean Davidson, dutifully
doing her therapy in Seaforth with a
great attitude toward full recovery.
Keep upon the tough work Jean.
Get those income tax papers
gathered and get ready to enjoy
March.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

On their way
The weather continued to co-operate this past weekend, at
least for winter sports fans, as plenty of snow made for
some great sledding during the Brussels Optimists’
snowmobile rally. (Vicky Bremner photo)
