Chew on this
Youth across Huron County have signed close to 500 postcards petitioning the Ontario
government to ban the sale of chew tobacco. Youth action group Rebels with a Cause,
shown here using the cards to share their message, delivered the bundle to Huron-Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell last week as part of National Through with Chew Week activities. Chew
tobacco contains over 3,000 chemicals, 28 that are known to cause cancer and can cause
devastating health effects such as oral cancer, heart disease, stroke and gum disease. From

The Huron County Health Unit
has confirmed two cases of pertussis
in children aged 13 and 16 in the
Goderich area.
Pertussis, also known as whooping
cough, is a highly contagious
infection. It is spread through close
contact when an infected person
talks, sneezes, or coughs.
Children who have pertussis will
have a runny nose, followed by a
cough that becomes more severe and
frequent. This may be followed by
gagging, vomiting or trouble
breathing. Sometimes after a
coughing attack, the child may give a
loud “whoop” when breathing in,
which is why the infection has been
called “whooping cough”. The
“whooping” symptom does not
always occur.
Adults also get pertussis. They
experience persistent, continuous
episodes of severe coughing.
The health unit recommends that
children and adults who have these
symptoms see their doctor right
away to be assessed.
This is also a good time to ensure
that your child’s immunization for
pertussis (combined with diphtheria,
tetanus and polio) is up-to-date. This
vaccine is given at two, four, six and
18 months of age, then again
between the ages of four and six.
Children who have been immunized
may still get pertussis but the illness
is less severe.
The most serious pertussis disease
occurs in young infants, who may
experience complications such as
pneumonia, seizures and
encephalitis and who are at the
greatest risk of dying from pertussis.

Unit at 482-3416 or if long distance

The Wingham Cemetery is running
on a deficit budget and North Huron
council is hoping to bring it to break
even.
“The deficit we’re running is not
appropriate,” said councillor Greg
McClinchey at the Feb. 19 council
meeting.
Council has to look at a different way
of handling the cemetery, he said.
Current burial rights in North Huron
are $600. Murray Ritsema, cemetery
supervisor, suggested the rate be raised
to $700.
Average resident fees in the county
are $617. Some cemeteries charge more
for non-residents.
Ritsema also suggested the township
should apply to the ministry for rights to
increase fees to $1,500. That would
mean the town could increase rates
gradually without having to apply for an
increase in fees every time it was
necessary up to that limit.
Councillors also expressed concern
the cemetery is running out of land and
that issue will have to be addressed
soon.
