The Citizen, 2008-02-28, Page 10Huron United Way board of directors announced Feb. 20 that the 2007 campaign will not reach its announced goal of $260,000. The campaign will fall short of the target by more than $30,000. Through an analysis of the campaign it was determined there are several factors that impacted the final total. “Perhaps most significant are the large capital campaigns taking place throughout the county,” said Kimberley Payne, executive director, Huron United Way. “Two communities, Goderich and Exeter have two significant campaigns taking place, both for health-related activities, a new CT scanner for Alexandra Marine General Hospital and upgrades at South Huron Hospital. The impact of these capital campaigns is affecting not only the United Way but many of the smaller not for profits as well, like Big Brothers Big Sisters South Huron, who are currently experiencing a financial crisis.” Other factors affecting the campaign are the condition of the manufacturing sector, the largest supporter of the United Way in Huron County. Chris Meier, chair of the Huron Manufacturing Association said: “I am saddened to hear that the United Way did not make its goal this year but I am not surprised. In the manufacturing sector, which has been a big supporter of the United Way in the past, both corporations and employees are feeling the pinch of economic pressures caused by a high dollar and a sluggish U.S. economy. Our employees support many causes and it seems like there are more and more causes to support every year. As manufacturers we would like to support them all too, but this is impossible as we have to be accountable for our dollars and there is less of this kind of discretionary spending available to us these days.” “We expect the final total of the campaign to reach $230,000, and we do not expect to see a negative impact on the funded agencies as several agencies are not accessing the community fund this year” according to Randy Stanlake, Chair, Huron United Way. It is not too late to send in your contribution to Huron United Way, Box 211, Goderich, ON N7A 3Z2, or go to www.huron.unitedway.ca to make your donation on-line. The Huron United Way is a local non-profit agency investing in Huron County through its 12 funded agencies. The new statutory holiday in Ontario called Family Day was held for the first time and our family took advantage of it. As it coincided with reading week for some university students, including our daughter Kelly, we were able to gather and enjoy the day together. Joining Rick and I were family members Lee Ann and Jason, Kelly and Adam and Leona McDonald. The afternoon was spent visiting andwatching curling, then we hadsupper before the kids were off. Anice “family day”.Leona Snyder has been broughtback to Seaforth hospital and wouldenjoy visitors. George Langlois andmy mother are still in Stratfordhospital, so I still get to visit them both on third floor. Nelson Ryan has had additional medical problems and has undergone hip surgery. He is in Grand Valley Hospital and we pray for a full recovery. We can report that Joe Semple is a patient in Listowel Hospital and we hope he will be home again real soon. Pleased to report that Jean Davidson is now in Seaforth hospital and will be for awhile so visitors are more than welcome. Anna Cunningham is still a patient in London hospital and we hope for her speedy return to home. A delay in departure for the trip home worked out for them in gaining another day at the resort. Now that wouldn’t be too hard to take. Some young men have returned from a trip to Mexico. The group of eight stayed at the Grand Oasis Cancun Resort. It was a huge resort with five different units of rooms, a snake-shaped pool and 10 restaurants, along with sushi, grill, snack, sports, fish and coffee bars. The boys went jet skiing, and on a submarine tour and saw huge sea turtles, colourful fish and coral reef. They also went parasailing, whichson Scott reports was awesome.Enjoying the break were ScottMcDonald, Chris and Devon Blake,Greg Medd, Jason Denys, KevinMurray, Steve Carnochan and BarryYoung.
