The Citizen, 2008-02-28, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2008. PAGE 9. A new elementary school fitness program kicks off this month in six schools in Huron County. Fitness AM is a 12-minute exercise routine set to fun music. Grade 7 and 8 students lead younger classes in a fitness routine with music playing over the school's public announcement system. The program is an initiative of the Huron County Health Unit. Co- ordinator Diana Simpson says, “This is a perfect solution to young people getting daily exercise into their lives. Research shows daily exercise helps children learn better.” Simpson says she’s pleased with the enthusiasm at the schools. The program is starting with six schools: Zurich Public School, Seaforth Public School, St. Boniface, Huron Centennial Public School, Clinton Public School and Grey Central. Simpson hopes to see the program implemented in 10 schools by the end of the school year. Simpson, a fitness instructor, is training the older students to lead the exercise routine each morning. Morris-Turnberry councillors spent nearly an hour at their Feb. 19 meeting examining a rough draft of an alcohol policy for events in the municipality. Jason Breckenridge of the Bluevale Recreation Committee was present for the discussion of the policy which will mostly affect Bluevale Hall and the nearby park. He warned against putting measures in the policy that would make it hard to rent the hall. “I’d hate to see a nice building sitting empty,” he said. “We don’t want to discourage renting the hall,” agreed mayor Dorothy Kelly. Councillors based their discussion on similar policies adopted by Howick and North Huron town- ships. Among the concerns were the number of staff required to run an event where alcohol is being served, particularly the need to hire security, either OPP or a private security firm. With a cost of $50 an hour for each of two security officers it would eat up any profit from an event if security is required for a smaller event, Breckenridge said. Municipal staff will draft a bylaw for review by council at a later date.
