Playa Pesquera, a beautiful resort
in Cuba, was the setting for the
wedding of Shane Wilson and

Greg and Sharon with lots of other
family and friends enjoyed the
beautiful sun and sand and the
wedding the first week of February. The Wilson kids grew up inBrussels, so it’s good to hear all iswell in their world. Shane andMinnie now make Jackson’s Pointhome, while Trevor is now living inthe Calgary area and sister Ainsleyhas Long Beach, California as herdry dock address with her job onwith Carnival cruise lines.
Uncles, aunts and friends made up
a 70-person party to celebrate the
wedding. Jan, Kiley and Trista
Deitner and Mike and Karen
Thomas were there representing the
Brussels support team.
When Castro announced his
stepping aside in the running of
Cuban affairs last week, should we
see any significance that Chief
McArter and Gail just happened to
be in the area?
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Strong words
Some Brussels Public School students are representing the area province-wide, showcasing
their writing talents, recently on display at the Brussels Legion. From left: Brussels Legion
youth education chair John Lowe, Tori Kellington, Mackenzie McGavin and Kristen Pipe.
Kellington was honoured with the top prize for her essay in the intermediate division at the
zone level, then at the district level and now her words will compete against those of the rest
of the province. McGavin will be representing at the provincial level as well. Her essay placed
first in the junior division at the zone level, then placed first again at the district level. Pipe’s
poem received the top prize at the zone level in the junior division, but she came up just short,
placing second at the district level. The provincial competition is currently in the judging stage
as submissions had to be in by the end of January, winners will be announced at a later date.

Grade 3/4
These last few weeks at Grey
Central Public School have been a
whirlwind - just like the snow
days
The Grade 4/5 to Grade 7/8
classes enjoyed a terrific day of
skiing at Talisman and were very
thankful that their ski day did not get
cancelled due to inclement weather.
The younger students hit the ice
pad that same day and had a great
time getting lots of exercise.
Speeches are on the go for every
class now.
The grade 7/8 class has also been
working hard in math, expressing
themselves creatively in art,
competing in floor hockey and
enjoying the odd snow day off.
Grade 6/7 students have just
finished their writing of fictional
narratives and a six-week stretch of
literature circles. Great books were
read and ideas and opinions shared
among the classmates.
The 5/6s are finding out what
amazing bodies people have, and
have welcomed a new student
teacher from Nipissing University.
Grade 4/5s are waxing eloquently
with poetry and getting an in-depth
look at our weather systems and
patterns - such as the pattern of snow
days almost every Monday or
Tuesday.
The Grade 3/4 class has just
finished amazing book report
recipes, responses to the exciting
Snow Treasure story, creating
unique Canadian flags, and
becoming mineralogists studying
real samples of fossils, rocks and
minerals.
Mrs. Smith's Grade 2/3s made
really yummy '100-day' necklaces,
told terrific stories and speeches and
shared Valentines together.
The Grade 1/2s are also gearing up
for 100s day with a jam-packed day
of activities including games, songs,
stories, sharing collections of 100
things, eating 100 snacks and
popping 100 kernals of
corn! They've also participated in a
Smart Ideas computer program
workshop and made 3D
marshmallow shapes.
The kindergarteners, are doing
picture shapes, practising their
reading and writing and enjoyed a
great Valentine’s Day celebration.

By Jo-Ann McDonald
Stormy weather again forced the
cancellation of the Cadet meeting at
the Brussels Legion last week. It also
cancelled the executive meeting for
the Branch.
Hopefully everyone can make it
out to the general meeting this week.
The Thursday night darts had 11
players take aim at the boards.
Having the best night were Sandra
Josling and Tim Harrison who
finished first. The second-place team
was Norm Dobson, Marlene Little
and Gord Jacklin. The high shot of
the night was by Tim shooting 133
and the high starts were by Marlene
with 122 and Catrina Josling with
116.
People are welcome any night to
come out and give darts a try. No
commitment, just attend when you
can.
The Friday night supper of beef
stew was enjoyed by a small crowd.
Thanks to Heather Dauphin for
helping out with the suppers these
days. If there is anyone else out there
who could lend a hand once in a
while, it would be appreciated. Call
Jo-Ann.
This week will be roast pork.
Saturday was busy with euchre
and darts on the agenda. The winners
from Zone darts were off to Elora
Branch to participate in District play.
Having a great day and winning the
team division were Ron Schmidt,
Ken Bird, Bob Richardson and
Norm Wylie. Playing in the doubles
division and placing second were
Ron Schmidt and Eric Ross.
Finishing in the top four in single
play was Norm Wylie.
All these gents will be advancing
to Provincial play in North Bay in
March.
Also participating was the team of
John Harrison, Cam Ross, Andy
Adams and Eric Ross.
There was Saturday afternoon
euchre at the Branch with 11 1/2
tables at play.
The first-place team was John and
Iola Subject earning 76 points. The
second-place team was Elsie Mogk
and Doreen Skinner with 72 points.
It was one of those unusual events
with three teams being tied for third
place, so sharing prize money were
pairs Cathy and Evelyn, Helen
Nolan and Betty Hulley and Stuart
and Lois Chamney.
The unlucky players of the day,
earning only 43 points were Ariel
Woods and partner Hazel. Lone hand
winners were Delores Howatt and
Ken Engel. Euchre is every two
weeks.
The Sunday night dance crowd
enjoyed the music of the Country
Versatiles. Over 95 dancers were
glad to be back as there have been
many dances cancelled due to the
weather.
The Cadets are still collecting
popcans and returnable bottles and
appreciate people bringing them to
the Branch on Tuesday evening for
pickup.
