The Brussels Atom Reps have won
their WOAA/OMHA quarter finals
in three straight games against
Lion’s Head.
In their first game, they won 2-0
with goals scored by Hayden TenPas
and Mitch Kellington.
Friday night saw them face off on
home ice. After a very fast-paced
game, Tim Waechter was the only
one to put the puck between the
pipes, giving Brussels a 1-0 win.
Saturday was a very intense game
with Brussels winning 3-1. Scoring
for Brussels were Kellington with
two, unassisted and TenPas with one,
assisted by Lexi Smith.
Goalie Matt McNichol and the
team have now earned six shutouts
this season.
Now they are waiting to learn who
they will play in the semi-finals.
The Blyth Kings Bantam boys
headed to Barrie, with 12 players,
for the provincial broomball
tournament, Feb. 8 - 10.
Blyth’s first opponents were the
Southwestern Devils on Friday
evening. Coaches went into the
game thinking their team would
have a hard time pulling off a win
against this tough team. A different
mind set became apparent after the
Kings successfully killed two
penalties and there was no score
after the first period.
Blyth’s goalie Murray Dale made
some fantastic saves in net for his
team and earned a shutout against
this very aggressive team.
Since there was no score during
regulation time, sudden death
overtime was needed to break the tie.
Blyth received a penalty for tripping.
They played a smart two minutes
and didn’t allow their opponents to
take advantage of the powerplay.
The teams were getting tired and
10 minutes into overtime, Blyth
couldn’t outrun their opponent on a
breakaway and the Devils scored to
win the game. It was a very
disappointing loss.
Saturday saw the Kings up bright
and early for a 7:30 a.m. game
against their local rivals from
Seaforth. Blyth outshot their
opponents during the game, but
Seaforth’s keen goalie made some
great saves.
Once again Dale earned a shutout
and with neither team scoring,
overtime was needed to break the tie.
Blyth received a penalty with just
over two minutes of overtime
underway. Seaforth took advantage
of their powerplay and scored to win
the game.
The Blyth Icedogs Midget boys
broomball team participated in the
provincial broomball tournament
held near Barrie, Feb. 8-10.
The Icedogs had a bad draw and
ended up playing their first game
against the gold winners for the
Midget level in the tournament, the
Eastern Warriors at 8:15 p.m.
Friday. Blyth knew it would be a
tough game going into the match,
but they were determined to do their
best and never give up.
Graham Bedard stood up to cover
the net against this talented team.
The Eastern Warriors were fast on
their feet and made excellent passes
to outplay Blyth.
The Icedogs had a couple of bad
shifts in the third minute of the
game and were scored on twice in
one minute. A winger received a
penalty shot for Blyth midway
through the period and the Icedogs
were able to kill the penalty without
letting their opponents score.
Bedard came out to challenge the
ball twice; and while he made the
first save, the Warriors picked up the
loose ball and scored.
Blyth’s centre, Dane Nickel, shot
the ball across the ice into the corner
and with less than 30 seconds left in
the period Ross McDonald scored
with a clean hard shot to the back of
the net.
At half-time the score was 4-1 for
the Eastern Team.
In the second period Blyth was
first on the scoreboard after winger
Alex Hogan shot the ball in front of
the net and centre Brent Drost
picked up the pass. He shot the ball
into the net over the goalie’s
shoulder.
The Warriors scored three more
goals before the final horn blew.
The Icedogs lost with a score of 7
to 2.
The Icedogs were sent to play
against another Eastern team,
Forever Young in their second match
of the tournament, on Saturday
afternoon. These two teams were
closely matched and after the first
period neither had scored.
A Blyth centre received two
penalties, but his teammates were
able to stay strong and kill the
powerplay without being scored on.
With just four minutes left in the
second period, a Blyth centre shot
the ball in front of his own net and
an Eastern winger picked up the ball
and shot it past the goalie. Blyth
poured it on and even pulled their
goalie, but the Eastern players
stalled Blyth long enough to prevent
the tying goal.
This match could have gone either
way, but the Eastern team took the
win, by a score of 1-0.
This disappointing loss ended
tournament play for the Icedogs.
