The group is concerned chew tobacco use is becoming a growing problem among youth. They were in local high schools on Tuesday and Wednesday asking local youth to sign postcards petitioning the Ontario government to ban the sale of chew tobacco. They were hoping to get over 500 postcards signed during National Through with Chew Week, Feb. 18 – 23. Rebels with a Cause peer leader Rachel Cannon, a student from Goderich District Collegiate Institute, says, “Big Tobacco is using aggressive marketing tactics to target youth to start using chew tobacco products. They have introduced candy flavours such as green apple, cherry, berry and peach. They are packaging chewing tobacco to look like candy or gum.” Chew tobacco products have been banned in Ireland, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Israel, and Australia. Rebels with a Cause believe that it can and should be banned in Ontario because of the negative health effects. Rebels with a Cause is a group of 10 youth employed by the Huron County Health Unit. They are a part of the Youth Action Alliance initiative of Smoke-Free Ontario. Their aim is to prevent tobacco use in youth and to expose how the tobacco industry directly targets youth to use their products. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2008. PAGE 7. (Vicky Bremner photo) Rebels says no to ‘chew’ A request to help sponsor the All- Ontario Bantam Lakers AAA championships was regretfully denied by North Huron council at its Feb. 4 meeting. The event is being hosted by the Huron Perth Lakers and the City of Stratford. The letter was submitted by a Wingham family whose son plays on the Lakers team. “This event will see the top seven Bantam AAA youth hockey teams in the province being invited to Stratford to compete for the title of provincial champion. Although only one team will reach their goal, the others will be ensured of a satisfying and rewarding experience,” the letter stated. The event is being held March 24-29 at the RBC rink in Strat- ford. Expenses are estimated at $25,000-$30,000, and council was asked to consider sponsorship through a souvenir program ad ranging in price from $50 for business card size to $275 for a full page. Reeve Neil Vincent opened discussion immediately, speaking against support of this kind. The sponsorship, he said, should come from business or individual supporters. “I understand the reason for the request, but a similar organization, Saugeen-Maitland is told to approach businesses or friends for sponsorship. I would be willing to support this personally, but I can’t agree to the use of township dollars.” Councillor Archie MacGowan asked if North Huron didn’t offer some financial support of teams like the Ironmen. Vincent pointed out that the organizations were entirely different with the Lakers being an “elite” organization which while having local players was not a local team. Clerk-administrator Kriss Snell explained that while there is sponsorship for teams such as the Ironmen it was suppporting events in North Huron facilities. Councillor Alma Conn ended discussion succinctly. “I support the comments being made by the rest of council, so let’s move on.” A letter will be sent explaining council’s position.
