The councillor from Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh took exception
to comments made regarding his
council.
The letter, included in the Huron
County council agenda for the Feb. 6
meeting stated an objection to an
official plan amendment (OPA) for
the East Part of Lot 4, Conc. 4,
Eastern Division of the Colborne
ward. The writer said she was
“disappointed that A-C-W council
disregarded the recommendation
from the county planning
department and Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority”, and voted
to adopt the the OPA.
At the meeting last week,
councillor Ben Van Diepenbeek
said, “Our council debated this and
felt that we should move on the
official plan amendment. There have
been four studies done and the next
one was requested only to determine
whether the species that is there will
be there in the spring. The individual
is willing to do it, but felt it’s over-
studied.”
He added that the study would go
to public meeting when the re-
zoning was discussed.
Van Diepenbeek remarked on
comments that he had heard were
made regarding council.
He also suggested the resident had
had some influence with the
planner.
The OPA is to enlarge an existing
aggregate operation. The property is
currently designated agriculture and
natural environment in the official
plan, and general agriculture and
natural environment in the zoning
bylaw. The amendment proposes to
designate 18.5 acres as extractive
resources.
Three letters of objections were
received by the county.
Director of planning and
development Scott Tousaw said that
A-C-W council had made a
reasonable decision. “Because all
the information wasn’t in front of
(the agriculture, planning and public
works committee) we requested
deferral.”
He added that the Ministry of
Natural Resources has now
identified the woodlot there as being
“provincially significant” and has
requested an environmental impact
study.
“As for the alleged influence of
the objecting neighbour with the
planner, she represented herself. We
treat everyone fairly.”
Warden John Bezaire of Central
Huron agreed. “The derogatory
comment was made by the objector,
not the committee or staff. I agree it
was horrible.”
