Morris-Turnberry councillors, at their Jan. 31 meeting, endorsed a resolution from the Municipality of South Bruce calling for a “responsible use plan” for applying pesticides in urban areas. The resolution calls for the provincial government not to ban use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes but to require those purchasing or applying pesticides to have taken a training program similar to the Grower Pesticide Safety Certificate required by those applying agricultural chemicals. In supporting the resolution deputy-mayor Jim Nelemans said many municipal bylaws against cosmetic use of pesticides are “going way overboard. I’m afraid the next step is to start on agriculture.” Council also endorsed a resolution from the Drainage Superintendents Association of Ontario which called on the province to clarify confusion between added powers given to conservation authorities over municipal drains under the Harris government’s Red Tape Reduction Act with the responsibilities for municipalities to maintain drains under the Drainage Act. Also supported were resolutions from the City of Waterloo calling for the province to re-examine how municipalities are funded for infrastructure and for the province to make municipalities exempt from the provincial sales tax. A resolution from North Grenville calling on the province to give one cent of the eight per cent sales tax to municipalities to support infrastructure was also endorsed. *** Council will begin its budget deliberation process with a meeting Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and another in early March. A public meeting to unveil the budget will be held March 18 at 7:30 p.m. *** Morris-Turnberry will apply for $300,000 in funding under the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative Fund for Salem Road reconstruction. Council will also seek $17,484 to help pay for 2007 expenses under the Drainage Superintendent and Maintenance grant. *** Council granted a reduction in taxes for the last three years for a property on which the house has been vacant for several years. Morris-Turnberry council briefs Council endorses pesticide resolution Huron Chapel’s scripture for Sunday was Hebrew 2:1. “We must pay careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift.” Pastor Dave Wood preached that Christians must stand, to cling to their faith and keep their conscience clear. The next men’s monthly Bible study will be held Saturday, Feb. 23 from 7:45 until 9 a.m. At Knox United Church on Sunday the Responsive reading was Psalm 99, and Gospel reading was Matthew 17: 1-9. For some high schoolstudents that meant exams werepostponed. And for other students it was two unplanned days off in a row as icy sideroads on Tuesday had kept many buses from running. As Thursday was a PD day it made for a short week for students. On Friday, area high schools were to have started a new semester, however heavy snow caused yet another day away from their studies. All the best with your new classes or co-op placements students.
