The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
PeeWee A girls hockey team took
part in the 10th annual Sarnia
Women’s Silverstick tournament on
Feb. 1-3.
In the first game, the Lightning
played the London Devilettes. After
end-to-end battles, the game
finished in a 1-1 tie. The lone goal
was scored by Hannah Davidson
with assists going to Caroline
McDowell and Sydney Smith.
In the second game the Lightning
played Oakville and again the game
ended in a tie with a 2-2 score.
Lightning goals were scored by
Kelly Gribbons and Nicole Marriage
with assists from Marriage and
Becky Bults.
In the third game of round-robin
action, the Lightning took on
Heartland and were victorious by 3-
1. Lightning goals were scored by
Gribbons, Shelsie Popp and
McDowell, with assists from Carly
Smith, Becky Waring, Gribbons and
Davidson.
In semi-final action, the Lightning
took on the Chatham Outlaws and
won the game 3-0. The shutout was
earned by Stephanie Sluys.
Goals were scored by McDowell
and Gribbons with two. Assists went
to Carly Smith, Sydney Smith,
Marriage and Gribbons.
In the championship game, the
Lightning had to take on the
hometown Sarnia Lady Sting.
It was a very evenly-matched game
that ended the third period with a 1-
1 tie.
Two minutes into overtime,
Davidson scored the winning goal,
assisted by Gribbons and Popp,
giving the Lightning a 2-1 victory.
The first goal was scored by
Marriage with assists from Waring
and Jaime VanLoon.
The Brussels Atom Reps played
the third game of their series against
Zurich. It was neck and neck and
throughout the game as both teams
needed a win – Brussels to take the
series, and Zurich to stop that from
happening. At the end of the third
period, it was tied two each. Scoring
the two were Dawson Peachey and
Mitch Kellington.
A ten-minute sudden-death
overtime became necessary. Both
teams made several attempts, but
neither was able to break that tie.
The fourth game of the series was
Saturday night in Zurich. Brussels
made 23 shots on the net by the end
of the third, and Zurich took 11 shots
on Matt McNichol.
The first goal was put in by Lexi
Smith with a great pass from
Kellington. Kellington put in the
second goal with help from Nic
Zwep and Tim Waechter. To thank
Kellington for his help on that first
goal, Smith set him up for the third
goal. The game was tied 3-3 at the
end of the third.
After a short scrimmage to get the
puck, Smith got out on a breakaway
to score the winning goal in
overtime.
Brussels will now face Lion’s
Head in the second round of
playdowns. The first game will be
Sunday night in Lion’s Head with
the second game back in Brussels on
Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:45 p.m. Come
out and watch.
