HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-02-07, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2008.By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe wintery weather put a damperon attendance at Brussels LegionBranch.
The Branch welcomes anyone to
drop in from 4 - 6 p.m. every day.
The Cadet Corp met Tuesday
evening for their sports night. There
was lots of jumping around,
calisthenics and time trials as well.
The Cadets were having fun and
finding out they were not as fit as
they thought they were.
Donations of pop cans and
returnable bottles are still being
collected and can be left at the rear
of the Legion on Tuesdays for Cadet
pickup. They also have cookbooksstill available for sale at the bar. There were 15 dart players out onThursday evening. The top team was
John Harrison and Sandra Josling. In
second place were Marlene Little,
Gord Jacklin and Harry Smith.The
high shot of the night was 140 shot
by two players, John and Sandra.
The Friday night supper had a
smaller crowd due to the weather but
still over 25 braved the snowfall to
join us at the Legion. A favourite,
sausage and sauerkraut, was
enjoyed. This week is meat loaf.
Saturday saw two sports events on
the schedule. Zone team mixed darts
were held in Goderich and theBrussels team of Sarah and AnitaLittle, Eric Ross and Andy Adamsfinished second for the day.
Congrats to them as they advance to
District play.
Playing cribbage at the District
level on the weekend were Cam
Ross, Harry Smith, Lloyd Glanville
and John Harrison. They travelled to
Port Elgin for the day and report
having a good day but not much luck
at the game of crib.
The Branch is always willing to
hear new ideas. Drop into theBranch and have chat with somemembers and inquire about joining.
Don’t you just love the four
seasons? Balmy days of summer
may need to be visualized as you’re
cursing that last snowflake in your
life. Sometimes we need to remind
ourselves, fairly firmly why we truly
appreciate the seasons.
On my appreciation list, coming
in at number one are the folks who
take the snow out of our sight.
Turnberry Street looks like a
beautiful airplane runway by the
time most folks are getting their day
started. So thanks fellas and keep up
the good work.
The people who read the weather
on television and radio get top
marks for keeping their voices and
faces at mid-expression as they
forecast, then report their stories on
wind, snow and sleet. It must be
hard, the times they get bang on not
to say “see I told you”.
Next on my winter appreciation
list are the regular folks who don’t
complain about winter, but see it as
a wonder of Mother Nature, the
stark beauty of the white on tree and
ground. Now I can appreciate their
wondering about her on a few days
lately.
One of the cold days last week I
glanced out the front widow and
stopped and smiled. There on the
bumper of Marc Barbour’s fuel
truck, really Foxton Fuel truck I
guess, sat three little sparrows all in
a tidy row as close to the motor as
they could possibly get. Smart wee
creatures catching a ray of warmth.
The winter carnivals and parties
are all in full swing. So dig out the
long johns, the skis, skates, snow
machines or sleighs and get in the
February frame of mind – try it,
you’ll like it.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
