with the desire to simply fix the
problem without spending the time,
we will communicate they are not
valued. This approach will not help. If
we have a heart of flesh, we are going
to want to understand the pain or how
we offended the other person.
The third step toward opening a
closed heart is to admit that we are
wrong.
The importance of confession and
admission of guilt is important even
on a national level. When the Soviet
fighter planes shot down a Korean 747
killing the more than 250 passengers,
the world was shocked. Immediately,
a number of the free world countries
demanded that Russia admit it was
wrong and apologize. News
commentators emphasized a previous
example when Israel shot down a
Libyan passenger airliner, and how it
apologized to the world and paid
restitution to all the passenger’s
families. But when the Soviets failed
to admit they were wrong, and failed
to make restitution, the free world
became even angrier and more
hardened toward them. (Smalley p.
16)
A fourth step to opening a closed
heart is to seek forgiveness. It is good
for us to ask the other person for
forgiveness. True restoration happens
when confession of wrong is made
and forgiveness is granted.
The story of the two brothers
continues:
“The older brother rose to
prominence in the capital and when
WWII came was commissioned as an
officer and posted in Palestine. One
night, recovering from an injury, he
lay under the stars in restless sleep
and troubled dreams. As in a vision,
he saw himself in the gathering of
disciples. Christ Jesus surveyed the
circle and protested, “Someone is
missing: it is Judas.”
‘Where is Judas my brother?’
The dreamer spoke. ‘I am Judas; I
had a brother once, and I betrayed
him.’
‘Go to your brother,’ Christ replied.
The journey from Palestine was
exhausting for the recovering man.
He arrived unannounced, was given a
cold welcome by his brother’s wife,
and at last found his brother watering
plants in the parched garden, seeking
to save his young trees in a time of
long drought.
His brother’s silence spoke of a soul
still imprisoned in the painful past.
That moment of tortured time arrested
was visible in face as well as form.
‘I’ve come all this distance on a
weekend leave to speak a few hours
with you,’ the older brother said, then
went straight to the matter of his great
wrong. When he had finished, both
were in tears, yet silent in their pain.
The first rainstorm of the year was
breaking as the older brother walked
back to the house and the younger
brother turned off the irrigation water.
Then in the distance the elder
brother heard the song of his brother
in the garden, as he had not heard him
sing since childhood. A song of his
own writing in boyhood, but now with
a new verse.
I rode all through the night
To the fire in the distance burning
And beside the fire found
He who had waited for so long.
He regained his brother.” (Source:
The New Freedom of Forgiveness p.

If you and I want our hearts to be
fully open and alive, we have to have
faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and
Savior. Our relationships with others
are important too. That is why Jesus
taught us to pray, “Forgive us our
debts as we forgive our debtors.”
Let us apply that and live with open
hearts and sing the way we were made
to sing.
