HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-01-24, Page 16In December I reported on the
Hullett Central Public School
Christmas concert. It was a most
enjoyable musical program.
The feeling at Hullett is that an
introduction to music is important to
every child’s education. The
program there includes singing,
learning drumming and being hands
on with a variety of band
instruments. Who knows where this
experience will take a child with
musical talent?
Moreover the school makes a
small room on the junior hall
available to two piano teachers, Julie
Falconer and Barb Bosman during
the school day. Using the school
makes it easier for parents and
children alike to study the piano.
Professional guitarist, Joshua
Gropp, is also teaching from that
room this year for the first time.
Nine Hullett pupils take basic
instruction on acoustic guitar-
playing from Joshua every Friday.
Joshua is a modest, rather laid-back
young man with whom the pupils
feel quite comfortable. With a
background such as Joshua’s parents
can be assured their children are
receiving topnotch instruction.
An average week has Joshua
giving instruction to 30-35 persons
of all ages. He uses the Pianovations
store in Blyth two nights a week and
teaches from his parent’s home in
Brussels as well.
Joshua took piano lessons brieflyas a young boy and still playstrumpet to which he was introducedin Grade 7. He bought his first guitarat age 13 and music became hisfuture. Although self taught to some extent he did take lessons from EarlFilsinger in Stratford for a time. Butit wasn’t long before Joshua hadpupils of his own.An F.E. Madill Secondary Schoolstudent, Joshua was in all of the musical/drama productions duringhis high school years. He was themusical director for Fame, the yearthe school presented that show. Hisfour years at Humber College werefilled with music courses. For many years Joshua was amember of the band, Perish. Now heperforms solo and did 130 gigs lastyear many of them in pubs andcoffee houses on three different toursto the west coast. One summer wasspent on a cruise ship on theCaribbean.Billed as an acoustic experimentalfolk rock musician, Joshua’s
repertoire includes many original
tunes along with folksy and classical
numbers. He continues to
experiment with what a guitar can
do.
Joshua’s CD, Sunsets From
Swingsets can be purchased at
Pianovations. Watch for him to be
performing in area venues in the
future.
The clouds have begun to clear for
Helen Lee. She had cataracts
removed from one eye on Thursday
and will soon have the other eye
operated on. Best of luck, Helen.
Londesborough’s newest resident
entered the world at 4 p.m. on
Sunday, Jan. 20. Weighing in at 9
lbs., 14 oz., Colton Andrew Radford
will certainly be making his
presence heard at the home of
Michael and Pam in the days weeks
ahead.
Welcome, Colton. Congratula-
tions to Dad and Mom.

Just outside Blyth to the north visibility was virtually non-existent as squalls blew into the area
on Sunday. Just a bit north-west of this scene, however, conditions were vastly different with
no snow and clear views. (Vicky Bremner photo)
