The Blyth Kings participated in a
broomball tournament held in
Mildmay Jan. 18-20. There were five
teams in the Bantam boys playoffs,
all trying to earn the gold medal and
the team banner.
The Blyth Kings played their first
game on Jan. 19 at 10:45 a.m.
against Seaforth. Murray Dale did a
great job in net for the Kings. He
made some great saves and earned a
shutout. The Kings worked hard to
take some shots on their opponents’
net, but just couldn’t get on the
scoreboard.
The game went into sudden death
overtime. Just one minute in, there
was a lot of action in front of the
Seaforth net, with several people
scrambling for the ball. Greg
Roetcisoender finally chipped the
ball into the net to win the game.
Blyth played on Saturday evening
against Innisfil, a very exciting game
to watch.
Blyth stepped up the play and
successfully killed a penalty for
slashing. There were some great
plays and some nice shots on
Innisfil's net, but no score in the first
period, Roetcisoender sent the ball
to the net. There was a bit of traffic
in front as Innisfil tried to clear the
ball away, but Hunter Broda chipped
it into the net to score for Blyth.
With the clock running down on the
last period of this game, Alex
Sanders passed the ball over to
Derek deBoer who slid in and scored
just before the final horn sounded.
Tyler Hallahan covered the net for
the Kings and earned a shutout for
his team.
Sunday at 2 p.m. was the next
game against Innisfil. The weather
conditions were not very good and
only nine players braved the roads to
play.
Blyth kept the pressure on during
the first period and easily outshot
their opponents. Innisfil’s keen
goalkeeper stopped shot after shot.
With less than a minute left in the
period, Broda scored.
Just three minutes into the second
period, Innisfil tied it on a
breakaway.
Fans were on the edge of their
seats as Blyth fought hard to kill a
powerplay. The players were getting
noticeably tired, but they didn’t give
up and kept doing their best to dig
for the ball. Murray Dale made some
great saves to keep his team in the
game. The ball went back and forth
to both ends of the ice, but neither
team could break the tie, so overtime
was required. Shawn Reinink
whacked the ball up the ice and
deBoer took control to score.
This victory earned the Kings a
spot in the championship game, held
at 5:45 p.m. against Mildmay.
With the road conditions
deteriorating and some area roads
closing, due to the snow and high
winds, Blyth wanted to head home.
After talking to the Mildmay
coaches, it was decided that the
championship game will be played
mid-February.
Mildmay hosted a broomball
tournament for the Central West
region Jan. 18-20. This tournament
hosted PeeWee, Bantam and Midget
teams from Blyth. Palmerston,
Seaforth, Mildmay and as far away
as Innisfil.
Players, parents and fans had to
drive through some nasty winter
weather, but with many matches
having a close score, the games were
very exciting to watch.
The Blyth Icedogs had their first
two games on Friday night, Jan. 18.
Blyth’s goalkeeper Graham Bedard
did a great job covering the net for
his team during this tournament.
During the first period Palmerston
was able to fire a ball into Blyth’s net
and get the lone goal of the match.
Blyth poured on the pressure
during the second period and took
shot after shot, but couldn’t get the
ball to hit the back of the Palmerston
net. Blyth’s team was digging for the
ball, making some great saves and
passes and taking scoring
opportunities during he game.
Blyth fought even harder in their
second match of the night as they
met the Seaforth Stealers. Their
team showed great defensive playing
and didn’t allow any goals during
Seaforth’s powerplays. With just
over three minutes left in the first
period, Seaforth was able to tuck the
ball into the corner of the net to take
the lead.
In the second period, Andy
Bolinger earned the assist when he
passed over the ball to Dan Dery
who scored. The Icedogs were
unable to score during a power play
and the game ended in a tie.
In overtime Blyth scored the
sudden-death goal. Kurtis Kolkman
shot the ball out of his defensive
zone. Dane Nickel picked it up, but
Seaforth stole it. Brent Drost
intercepted Seaforth’s play, turned
and scored on a breakaway.
This earned the Icedogs a second
place spot which meant they would
play the third-place team on
Saturday night.
The Icedogs had to play Seaforth
once again. Both teams came out
fighting hard.
Four minutes into the first period,
Seaforth was able to get past the
Icedogs defence to score.
Seaforth’s defensive team kept
shutting Blyth’s down.
The second period saw both teams
earn a penalty, but neither was able
to take advantage of their powerplay.
Since the Icedogs couldn’t clear the
ball out of their defensive end, for
that tying goal the final horn
sounded and Seaforth had a 1-0 win,
and a spot in the championship
game.
Kings make it to title game
The Brussels Novices had a busy
weekend.
The first hosted Zurich on Friday
night and played extremely well to
come away with a 3-2 victory.
Logan Kellington nailed a hattrick
to lead his team offensively. Assists
were credited to Delayna Smith and
Bennett Newell.
Derrick Waechter was solid in net.
Travelling in bad weather, the
team headed to Paisley for the
Novice Rep tournament.
The first game was against
Seaforth. This was a close contest
that kept all the fans on the edge of
their seats.
Kellington got things started for
his team, but Seaforth soon came
back to tie.
Brussels fought through to the
third period when Wyatt Machan
bulged the twine.
Smith picked up two assists.
Unfortunately, having picked up
two penalties Brussels let Seaforth
take advantage of the powerplays
and skate away with a 3-2 victory.
The next game was against
Shallow Lake, a very strong team.
Brussels showed determination and
the hard work paid off with a 5-3
victory.
Kellington again scored a hattrick
and Machan got two.
Assists went to Daneil Frits,
Connor Bridge, Konrad McArter,
Cody Harding and Smith.
Waechter was solid in net.
Brussels made it to the finals with
hardly any rest between games.
They met Minto in this contest
whose solid defence held the
Brussels squad to one goal, scored
by Machan. The final score was 4-1
for Minto.
Busy week for Novices

The Brussels Tykes played in the
Wallace Fundays tournament.
The kids had a great time,
beginning with their first game on
Friday night, against Milverton.
A power outage delayed the start
of the contest, but when the teams
finally hit the ice it was back
and forth action for much of the
game.
Brussels bulged the twine no less
than nine times while goalie Jarren
Thompson allowed just two to sneak
by him.
Scoring were Avery McArter with
five, Noah Terpstra with a hattrick
and Cameron Gibson.
Saturday the team faced off
against Seaforth, in a nailbiter.
Seaforth won 4-3. Terpstra scored
assisted by Sarah Strome. Nolan
Johnston and Ronan Jarad got the
assists on McArter’s two goals.
The third game was against
Listowel. The Tykes really worked
hard, but came up short again by a
score of 4-3. Terpstra scored two
while McArter got one. Assists went
to Hudson Smith, Dana Dolmage
and Brett Stevenson.
