Heartfelt congratulations from
villagers is extended to Jack and
Helen Lee who celebrated 60 years
of marriage on Dec. 26. Every
member of their immediate family –
19 plus Jack and Helen – were able
to attend a celebration at the
Mandarin Restaurant in Kitchener
on Dec. 27. Along with their own
three children, Beverley, David and
Barbara, and two of their spouses
were seven grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
When I spoke with Barb she noted
that in spite of the fact that everyone
lives just a short drive, more or less,
from each other, everyone is caught
up with their own lives and it was
really wonderful to have everyone
come together for the event. Aaron
Mustard currently is at Camp
Petawawa and will be deployed this
summer so the whole clan may not
come together again for some time.
Jack and Helen were married on
Boxing Day in 1947, the same day
Helen’s parents celebrated their 41st
anniversary. The quiet wedding took
place in the manse of the Blyth
United Church officiated by Rev.
Rodgers. Bill and Wilma Radford
were the couple’s attendants.
Helen was the only girl in her
family and some of her nine brothers
were blamed for the fact that the
couple ran into some difficulty
leaving the church. It seems Jack’s
Model A had been set up on blocks
so that the wheels only seemed to
touch the ground. That is just one of
the many stories that have surely
filled those 60 years.
Jack and Helen have lived the
entire 60 years of their marriage in
the same corner of the village. They
moved only once and that was just
across the street. The couple have
been an integral part of village life
all those years. They both found
work within the village and have
always participated in village church
and social events.
Many of the village residents have
noticed that Dorothy Johnston has
not been acting as crossing guard for
the school children this school year.
Greater commitments at home have
prevented her from being available
this year. Just before the term ended
in December, a new guard had
accepted the task.
Deb Wray is now at the corner of
London Road and Londesborough
Road twice a day for an hour each
time. Ms Wray does not live in the
immediate area. Therefore we
appreciate the effort involved in
keeping our children safe each day.
There will be a new face in the
halls of Hullett Central Public
School from Jan. 14 to Feb. 28. Pam
Jewitt, a student teacher from theD’Youville Teacher EducationProgram will be working with Mrs.Susan Barnett in the Grade 1classroom and the music program. The character attribute being givenemphasis in the school in January isresponsibility. Responsibility meansbeing reliable and considerate.Have you seen the new Nissan
Altima ad that is currently airing on
TV? Did you pay attention to its
personalized licence plate?
LUVMINE. It reminded me of a
previous column in which I
mentioned a few I had spotted. We
were on the road again recently and
have a few more to mention.SPIFFEE caught my attention asdid CREWSER on a family SUV. Itput me in mind of the days ferryingboys to hockey.A convertible was wearing theplate BRED2WIN. An airport limohad the plate 001FLY. Another thatmade me appreciate people’singenuity was 2REAL4U.
This fellow was either a music
fancier or had aspirations about
being a race car driver – BLU
BUYU. This last one probably
belonged to a community news
reporter – SNEWPS.
Where did this trend originate?
Perhaps it was with the TV series, Dallas and JR’s plate – JR 1,etc.Seniors holdcard party

Stayin’ alive
Helen Lee’s Christmas rose shocked its owner last week
during the unseasonably-warm weather by revealing
several alive and well stems even after being buried under
nearly a foot of snow for weeks. Lee has had the rose for
several years, but has never been quite so surprised as this
year. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
