Blyth goalscorers were Drew VanWyk with four goals, Damon Allen and Jared Shearer. Assists went to Bailey Bos, Mason Campbell, Ethan Coultes and Carson Richmond. The Blyth defence of Parker Gibbings, Nick Aitken, Colin Howson and Mitch McNichol played very well in their own end stopping many late offensive attacks from the Brussels team. Jake Gulutzen played very well in the Blyth net turning aside several breakaways early in the game. The game featured several good passing plays by the Blyth team. Coach Bryce Toll said, “We played great this game. Our passing was exceptional and the team was able to score on a majority of our chances.” Brussels goalie Jarron Thompson had a solid game in net. Noah Terpstra and Avery McArter with two goals apiece scored for Brussels. Assists were earned by Teddy Jacklin, Hudson Smith, Jasmin Vader and Brett Stevenson. The Blyth Atom Girls traveled to Mount Forest this past weekend for a tournament in the C Division. It was the team's first stretch of games against C teams similar to the ones they may meet in the upcoming provincial tournament qualification playoffs. The team came up short in their three games, however they played very well and were a bounce or two away from winning two games. The first game on Friday night was against Owen Sound. The girls were a bit overwhelmed in the first seven minutes and found themselves down 2 - 0. They managed to mount a comeback and were just unable to find the equalizer with the goalie pulled to face the losing side of a 3 - 2 score. Ashley Higgins scored both Blyth goals with assists going to Amy Boyce, Teresa Atkinson, Morgan Howson and Sydney Wightman. The second game was against Waterloo and turned out to be Blyth's game of the year so far. There were numerous great plays and chances to score at both ends of the ice. The goaltending was outstanding and Lindsay Shiell kept Blyth in the game on numerous occasions. The third period ended at a scoreless draw and the game went to a five-minute overtime period. The action still continued at a high pace and the Waterloo Ravens ended the game with 1:22 left in the fourth period, as they tucked in a shot inside the post and over the sprawling Blyth goalie. The coaching staff was extremely proud of the effort and determination shown in this game and the experience gained will be very valuable. The final game was an 8 a.m. start on Sunday against a very powerful team from Woolwich, which won their first two games by large margins. Again Blyth found themselves down 2 - 0 early in this contest. Midway through the second with Blyth playing short handed, Higgins stole the puck and beat several players to place a perfect shot just inside the post, cutting the margin in half. Woolwich regained the two-goal margin on that same powerplay. They would add two more late in the third to take the game by a 5 - 1 score. The Bantam Bulldogs took to the ice on Sunday, Jan. 13 in Ripley to begin this season's playoff run. After a scoreless first period, Blyth made it on the board in the second. The first goal was scored by Ryan Sjaarda, assisted by Tyler Stevenson and Adam Cronin. Then minutes later Matt Chalmers scored an unassisted goal. With just about two minutes left in the first Ripley would get their first, then tie the game with 5:39 left in the third. The Dogs kept the pressure on. Many posts were hit during the game. With under a second left in the game the Dogs found the net for the final time. Scoring was Stevenson, assisted by Adam Cronin. Blyth was successful at winning the flip. Game two was in Blyth on Wednesday, Jan. 16th at 7:30 p.m. Game three will be in Blyth Monday, Jan. 21st at 9 p.m. Blyth Atom girls play in tournament The Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA Midgets won gold this weekend in the Scarborough Sharks tournament.
