Pat Cook and her husband,Bob, lit the Christ candle in theAdvent wreath at LondesboroughUnited Church during the ChristmasEve service. That white candle in thecentre of the wreath signifies thatChrist is the centre of our lives. His Christmas birth tells the world that we are greatly loved by God. His birth encourages Christians to share with others the presents of life – love, hope, peace, joy, kindness and understanding. Thought-provoking meditations were supported with music and scripture readings. Along with a variety of carols sung by the entire congregation were musical numbers by the senior choir. What Child Is This? was sung the entire choir. The ladies offered Gentle Mary Laid Her Child and themen of the choir sang, There’s a Starin the East. A solo by John Jewittfeatured Star of the East.Scripture readings detailing theevents surrounding that firstChristmas were given by Shelby Radford, Tonya Drost, Angelika Sturzenegger and Teresa Atkinson. Costumed members of the Sunday school silently enacted the story on the dias at the front of the sanctuary. The first meditation spoke of the anticipation experienced in the weeks leading up to His coming at Christmas. The question was asked, “Who do the children think He is?” Adults, too, are looking to/wanting the coming of Christ and they must instill in children the wonder and mystery of the Christian event, Rev.Pat said. The world bustles with things todo at Christmas. Bethlehem, too,was a bustling place the night Marylaid her first-born in the clean strawof a manger. Everyone searches for the perfect gift at Christmas. Christ’s birth was God’s perfect gift to the world. Christians had longed for/dreamed of the coming of a saviour for centuries. That lowly infant child was a dream come true. In that child all who draw near will find a home. The whole world can rejoice in the birth. The last meditation told how into our imperfect world came perfection in a child. He still lives in the world fulfilling the promise of Christmas. In her benediction Rev. Cooksuggested congregants follow theChristmas star to find faith, havehope and live love.Poinsettias on the memorial standsfor this special service had beenplaced by the family of the late Joy Penfound in her memory.
